Local students win speech competition
EXETER — Two Exeter Public
School students were big winners at
the Exeter Legion Zone Public
Speaking competition Saturday.
Emily Hartman took home first
place honours in the Grades 1-3 cat-
egory, while Charlotte Anderson was
the winner in the Grades 4-6 catego-
ry. Both will go forward to the dis-
trict finals at the Kincardine Legion
March 20.
Ron Helm of the Exeter Legion
reported there were 300 people in
attendance at last weekend's com-
petition in Exeter. There were 38
competitors between Grades 1-8.
Competitors were the winners in
their respective categories from the
13 individual Legion branch contests
held in previous weeks. Speeches
were three to five minutes long and
Helm said they were "outstanding."
"There were dissertations on poli-
tics, history, mythology, vivid fiction
and even comedy. There were some
interesting reminiscences that were
indeed surprising from some so
young. The audience found the day
interesting and entertaining and
their pleasure was evidenced by the
enthusiastic applause for each stu-
dent's delivery."
The winners were:
• Grades 1-2-3, Emily Hartman
(1st place, Exeter Public School),
Haley Fischer (2nd place,
Teeswater) and Shamus O'Riley (3rd
place, Seaforth);
• Grades 4-5-6, Charlotte
Anderson (1st place, Exeter Public
School), Thomas Fisher (2nd place,
Wingham), and Derik Bachert (3rd
place, Brussels);
• Grades 7 and 8, Sarah Anne
Cleary (1st place, Kincardine) Bruce
Selinger (2nd place, Howick) and
Jessica Sparling (3rd place, Blyth).
