Starting Oct. 4 it ran 16 successful sessions of teaching six to eight year old players basic skills in stick handling, shooting and skating. The camp was organized by South Huron Minor Hockey coach Dick Lord, who wanted to imple- ment it for several years and pushed it for the 2003-04 season. Lord said the SHMH executive was very accommodating to the idea and worked time in for the camp. He added other centres are run- ning similar camps, whether on a per team basis or for younger play- ers. Lord said he wanted to run the camp because he feels more of the basic skills should be developed at a younger age. "The sooner a player in any sport is shown the proper technique, the better basic skills they will have. A player at the age of nine or 10 should already know the proper way to give and receive a pass, for example." "The actual time players receive in instruction is limited to a team practice of 50 minutes a week. This is not enough time." Lord said the age range of six, seven and eight year olds created a gap in skill level of those attending, but worked out well overall. He based the camp on his own experience and included not just instructional time, but some time similar to "pond" hockey time. Twenty-two players registered for the camp, which he said was good for the first year. With experience teaching at that age, Lord noted the most important things required were patience and being a bit of a kid at heart. After some confidence had been instilled in the players, Lord said they were keen to move on and attempt some more difficult skills. Lord worked the players on skat- ing backward every week but also on puck control and stick handling. "In a hockey game, the above average player may handle the puck approximately 40-45 seconds. A team member with lesser skills will handle it even less, therefore neither one can improve easily with this time." Lord said he realized right away to separate the skill level of the players and supplied drills to the assistants that varied slightly depending on the players they had. He saw great improvement over the course of the 16 weeks and believes the existing format is good, being spread out through the hock- ey season. The only change he could foresee would be to move from the Saturday morning time slot as it seems to harm attendance because of the age levels and their team games. Overall Lord felt the camp was successful in his mind, saying the players seemed to enjoy the time and different things shown them. The feedback he has received was positive. Lord was assisted in the camp by Ryan Knee, Brian Horner, Jeff Slaght, Rob Bryson Bev Thompson, and Brayden Lord. "My help was very good, and that is important because it allows more coach time per player. The only real concern was the Saturday morning time and the game con- flicts with Novice and Tyke teams" said Lord.
