The Hawks will attempt to even the series tonight (Wednesday) in Lucan at 7:45 p.m. with game three in Exeter March 12 at 8:30 p.m. and game four back in Lucan March 17 at 7:45 p.m. Lucan stormed out of the gate in the first peri- od Sunday night firing four goals before the period was over, build- ing a 4-0 lead and chas- ing Exeter goalie Justin Hayter for Cam Becker. Exeter coach Dave Revington described the game as the poorest col- lective effort he could remember. "They were better at every aspect and every position. We didn't seem to have any desire and were flat really." With the Hawks fin- gered for four straight penalties in the first, Lucan took advantage firing three power play goals. Mark Flood put the Irish on the board just under five minutes in and Lucan kept up the pressure, outshooting the Hawks 13-4 in the first period. Mike Burns made it a two -goal lead three min- utes later and the Irish continued to roll with a pair of goals two min- utes apart by Kyle Smith and Matt Thompson. The Hawks tried to get back in the game in the second period with a pair of goals as Lucan ran into penalty trouble. Pat Clark got the Hawks on the board with an unassisted effort early in the period but Flood restored the four goal lead with his sec- ond of the game three minutes later. The Hawks went one for six with the man advantage and Lucan converted three of its five chances. Early in the second the game was halted for half an hour after Brandon Wedlock took a hard hit into the boards that cracked his helmet and left him facedown on the ice. Wedlock was taken to South Huron Hospital by ambulance and then to University Hospital. He was given a pair of CAT scans that proved nega- tive and was expected to be released Tuesday. Exeter General Manager John Rasenberg said Wedlock was done for the series and it was unknown when he would be returning to play. Justin Knee cut the lead to 5-2 on a power play at 6:21 but it was all the Hawks would get. Lucan added an empty net goal in the third by Adam Thomson to seal the 6-2 win. Mike Burns had a pair of assists to go with his goal, with Matt Read col- lecting three assists. Tyler Silver and Charlie Moir also had assists. Matt Vlemmix and Jason Stuckless had assists in the loss for the Hawks. Revington said it was hard to pick out a player who had a good game, "but since we were lousy as a group, maybe we can be good as a group Wednesday." But the Irish needed extra time to finish off Mitchell, with Jeff Silver ending it at 3:36 of the 10 minute overtime. With both teams playing it cautious in the opening period, neither team was able to generate many good chances or sustained pressure with Lucan out - shooting the visitors 9-4. But the Hawks had the best chance of the period when Brent Yost broke in alone on Lucan goalie Joe Dobbie who made the save to keep it scoreless. Mitchell broke the dead- lock at 15:57 of the second though, when Chris Ward took a pass from Tim Vosper in the corner and fired a low shot that trick- led through the pads of Dobbie. But Lucan took advan- tage of a power play before the period was over to tie the score, when Matt Thompson converting from Dan Crowley and Matt Read. Checking stayed tight in the third but Dobbie was forced to make another stop on a breakaway by Dave Elliott to keep it 1-1. A Mitchell power play midway through the peri- od looked like it might give them the chance to take the lead again, but the Hawks were unable to generate anything against the penalty killing of the Irish. With regulation time done, it went to the extra frame and Silver made no mistake on his chance, picking up the puck in the slot and firing a wrist shot past Mitchell goalie Jeremy Matheson.
