WOSSAA win sends Panthers to OFSAA
PORT STANLEY — The Panther girls hockey team
won the WOSSAA A/AA girls title March 4 in Port
Stanley to advance to the OFSAA tournament March
29-31 in Pembroke.
The Panthers won the title with wins over
Woodstock in the semifinal before a hard fought win
over North Middlesex.
Assistant coach Lynne Farquhar described the game
as a "real barn burner" and "heart attack city" for the
coaches.
Despite giving up a short handed goal to Huron Park
to open the scoring, the Panthers didn't let it get them
down.
Farquhar said the team came out flying, shifted into
a higher gear and never looked back with a strong
effort from every player.
Emily Sararas tied it before the end of the first peri-
od and the Panthers took the lead with a pair of goals
in the second period.
Katie Stewart put the Panthers ahead to stay at 9:41
before Kelsey O'Rourke gave the Panthers a two -goal
cushion with three minutes left in the period.
The Panthers took over in the third with six unan-
swered goals including three from Stewart, with only
Sararas's second of the game interrupting Stewart's
natural hat trick putting South Huron up 7-1.
The Panthers didn't let up and continued to find the
Huron Park net, with Leanne Cronyn and Jessica
Bickell adding two more as the Panthers cruised to a
9-1 win.
Leading the attack for the Panthers was Sararas
with a seven point game on two goals and five assists.
Besides firing four goals Stewart also had an assist,
with Julie Farquhar collecting five assists, Bickell get-
ting three points and Cronyn two.
Susie McCann, Kristen Reschke and O'Rourke also
picked up assists and Lea Mudge got the win in net.
After Listowel lost 2-1 to North Middlesex it set up
the final between the Panthers and Parkhill.
South Huron was first on the board with a goal by
Bickell but Parkhill took control late in the period fir-
ing three goals in the last six minutes to build a 3-1
lead.
With Parkhill pressing in the second, Mudge made a
game saving stop to keep it 3-1.
The Panthers took advantage of the stop with a pair
of goals 50 seconds apart by Stewart and Reschke.
Parkhill struck back to retake the lead a minute
later, but a power play goal by Stewart with just over
a minute left in the period tied it again.
An early goal in the third put Parkhill in the lead
again, but the Panthers would not be stopped as
Stewart completed her second hat trick to tie it at 5-5.
The combination of Sararas and Stewart continued
to click as Stewart put South Huron ahead for the first
time at 12:33.
Parkhill refused to quit tying it only 20 seconds later
before Kelly Cronyn went in on a breakaway for the
winning goal to make it a 7-6 final.
Sararas had four assists in the win, with O'Rourke
and Reschke each getting a pair. Bickell also had an
assist and Mudge picked the win in net.
Farquhar said the team showed a lot of heart not
getting down when they got behind.
"Parkhill was a great opponent and both teams were
appreciative of the many fans who drove to Port
Stanley to see the fmal."
SHDHS Panther
fundraising

the Panther girls hockey team will be working on
fundraising activities to offset costs with entry
fees, bussing and accommodation.

the team by making a donation, they can do so by
contacting Heather Strano or Lynne Farquhar at
the high school at 235-0880.

South Huron has qualified to advance to the
provincial championships.
