HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Times Advocate, 2004-03-10, Page 88 Exeter Times–Advocate Wednesday, March 10, 2004 Crediton's Lisa Johnson received a plaque and certifi- cate from South Huron Mayor Rob Morley March I recognizing her gold medal performance at the world dance championships in Reisa, Germany. Morley told Johnson she achieved a "great accomplishment" and her name will go on a plaque at the South Huron Rec Centre. He said since South Huron became an official municipality four years ago, Johnson is the first to receive such recognition from the municipality. Johnson said she was deeply honoured and called her success in Germany last November the experience of a lifetime. (photo/Scott Nixon) World Day of Prayer service in Kirkton By Muriel Lewis GRANTON CORRESPONDENT GRANTON - The annual Oyster and Roast Beef Supper sponsored by the Granton Masonic Hall Board was well attended at the Kirkton Woodham Community Centre on Sat., March 6. UCW Granton -Wesley UCW Unit 2 met at the church on Thursday evening, March 4. President Marion Gatt led the discussion when some GRAN upcoming events were planned including a vendors' market to be held on Sat., March 27 (1-6 p.m.) at the church. Unit 1 met at the home of Lay Pastor Val Hodgins on Thurs., March 4 for lunch at noon served by the hostess assisted by Cathie Westman and Becky Kindree. The meeting followed, chaired by Westman. New members were welcomed and new business was discussed. Upcoming unit events were announced and will be posted at the church. Next meeting will be held at Carolyne Walden's home. Val Hodgins gave a presentation with pictures of her recent cruise trip to the Falkland Islands, off Argentina. Madeline Hardie concluded the program with a word game and everyone had a good time. Unit 3 met on Tuesday evening, March 2 at Cheryl Wright's home with 11 members in attendance. The meeting was chaired by acting president Isabel Mardlin who opened with a reading, 'How Great is the Worth of a Friend.' The business was conducted and reminders given of the World Day of Prayer, the Lenten Lunches and the Lenten Bible Study series. It was decided to have a fun raising event and an evening of euchre for members and friends was planned for March 19. The program component consisted of each one sharing a poem, reading or music with the theme of March: springtime, friend- ship, St. Patrick's Day and Irish heritage. Hats off to to -day's group: Carl Finkbiener who arrives early to help Mary Korcinia bring all her items in and readies the hall for exercises with the help of Bob Kirk at 10 a.m.; Jean Gingerich and Cecelia Farwell preparing of food; Ken Gingerich delivering take-out meals and picking up those needing transportation; Doris Jantzi, Mary Lou Denomme, and Aleida Hendericks for serving and clean up; and those at the desk, Glena Olcen & Gwen McKellar selling 50/50 tickets and receiving payment for meals from those attending; Glena Olcen for placing flowers on tables and providing music for the singing of 0 Canada and the grace before the meal. This is a good Crime of the week GRAND BEND — On Jan. 16 thieves entered a residence on Dogwood Drive in Grand Bend by forcing open the west basement door. They stole an apartment size refrig- erator with three cases of beer, a video cassette recorder, a 24 inch televi- sion, 15 bottles of assorted alcohol, a laptop computer and several jackets. The value of the property is estimated to be worth $3,000. Next week, Marjorie Johns will speak on mis- sionary work in Japan. McKellar announced a euchreama in Hensall for April 1, proceeds for the Tri -county games, starting Stop Smong.
