Sports
Pentathlon champion
GUELPH — In only her
first try at Modern
Pentathlon competition,
South Huron District
High School student
Melanie McCann cap-
tured first place at the
Winter Nationals in
Guelph Jan 30-31.
Modern
Pentathlon con-
sists of fencing,
pistol shooting,
swimming, run-
ning and riding.
McCann is
coached by Baird
Robinson, a
teacher at St.
Anne's in Clinton,
and who had seen
her at local track
meets.
After being told
McCann was also a com-
petitive swimmer,
Robinson contacted her
in August and intro-
duced her to the sport.
McCann trains with
Robinson and Liam
Whallen every Friday,
usually in fencing, and
in shooting at a gun club
in London with coach
Helen Smith.
Robinson said the ath-
leticism of McCann in
running and swimming
led him to contact her.
"Usually in Canada we
get girls from a riding
background and they
tend not to have the run-
ning and swimming
skills."
As part of her training,
McCann swims five days
a week and fences two
hours a week as well as
running on her own.
McCann said she
entered the nationals to
see how it was and did
better than she expect-
ed.
In her Youth `B' girls
division, com-
petitors fence,
shoot 20 shots
at a 10 metre
range in 40
seconds, swim
200 metres,
and run 2000
metres. Riding
is not part of
winter compe-
titions.
elanie McCann
Cann placed second
in shooting,
third in fencing, first in
swimming and first in
running
She said fencing was
the hardest event,
requiring a lot of skill
and strategic thinking.
Competitors can score
anywhere on their oppo-
nent's body in fencing,
with a sensor attached
to a light that goes off
when a hit is scored.
In the running portion,
McCann had a 51 second
handicap due to the
leader having more
points overall, but
McCann still overtook
her to win the event.
As well as some small-
er events this summer,
McCann will also be
competing at the sum-
mer nationals held in
Calgary in July.

Atoms overwhelm
Strathroy Junior `B's
STEPHEN — The South Huron Atoms didn't get the
opponent they expected Feb. 25 in Stephen but still
emerged with a victory.
The Atoms were expecting a smaller Strathroy team
than the one that skated onto the ice, which was the
Strathroy Junior 'B' Rockets.
Atom coach Rob Bryson and Strathroy captain Jesse
Schroeder arranged the game as a reward for the
Atoms.
Despite the surprise, the Atoms immediately took the
game to their larger opponents, playing a hard hitting
game at every chance.
As the game went on, skill began to triumph over size
and the Atoms took the game away from the Rockets,
emerging with a well deserved victory.

Panther basketball teams fall just short
EXETER — The Panther
junior boys advanced to
WOSSAA March 3 in St.
Thomas with a 34-31 win
over Stratford Central
Monday.
Feb. 25 the Panthers
won 44-41 in the Huron
fmal over Goderich.
The team played a slug-
gish game until the final
quarter of the game.
They showed character
by pulling a win even
though they were not at
their best.
Justin Knee led the
attack with 12 points, fol-
lowed by Spencer
Baehnisch and Jordan
Skinner each with eight.
Dustin Clifford added
five points and Tyler
Knip, Brendon VanOsch,
Brent Johns and Delaney
Siren all helped con-
tribute to the surge at the
end.
The juniors took on
Stratford Central Friday
in the Huron -Perth semifi-
nal and lost a hard fought
72-69 game in overtime.
It was a fast and furious
game with many lead
changes throughout.
It went down to the
buzzer but the last lead
change was favourable
for Northwestern.
The South Huron team
played a great game and
with a roll or bounce
would have come out on
top.
The senior boys finished
their season with a 78-45
loss to Stratford
Northwestern in a Huron -
Perth crossover semifinal
game Feb. 27.
The team was playing a
bit shorthanded but they
played well regardless.
Everette Dionne led the
way with 18 points, Pete
Clifford added 13 points
and Sean Murray and
Pete Phouttharath each
added six.
Dionne, Murray and
Phouttharath each played
their last game for South
Huron.
Well done from coach
Terry O'Rourke who
thanks them and all of the
players for a fun season.
