Hawks eliminate North Middlesex four strai

EXETER — The Exeter
Hawks finished a four
game sweep of the North
Middlesex Stars on the
weekend to advance to
the next round and will
await the winner of the
Lucan-Mitchell series.
The Hawks pulled out a
hard fought 3-2 win at
home Friday night before
finally subduing the Stars
6-3 in Parkhill Feb. 28.
Despite outshooting the
Stars 15-6 in the first
period Friday night, the
Hawks couldn't get any-
thing by North Middlesex
goalie Nick Lamb.
The visitors were first
on the board midway
through the period on a
power play when Brian
Dixon made it 1-0 for the
Stars.
The Hawks kept the
pressure on to begin the
second period and were
immediately rewarded.
Jeff Finkbeiner shook off
the shadowing of Matt
Bork to make it a 1-1
game.
In a close checking sec-
ond period neither team
had many chances but
late in the period the
Hawks took the lead on a
goal by Pat Clark.
Exeter goalie Justin
Hayter was sharp when
he had to be, including a
stop on a North Middlesex
power play late in the
period to keep it 2-1.
With the Hawks nursing
the one -goal lead with five
minutes left in the game,
the Stars got the equalizer
on a power play as Shaun
Dorrestyn slid a backhand
underneath Hayter for a
2-2 game.
But the tie lasted only a
couple of minutes as the
Hawks went to the power
play and took advantage
as Justin Knee picked up
a rebound and slid it in
for the winner.
With time winding down
the Hawks didn't give the
Stars a chance to try for
the tying goal, keeping
them in their own end.
Jason Stuckless had a
pair of chances on the
same shift, being robbed
by a glove save by Lamb
before breaking in on his
backhand and and being
stopped by Lamb again
seconds later.
Matt Vlemmix had a
pair of assists in the win
with singles from Knee,
Shawn Sherwood, Chad
Deman and Stuckless.
The Hawks were looking
to finish off the Stars
Saturday night and had a
3-0 lead by the middle of
the second.
But the Stars weren't
done, replying with three
goals in the last 10 min-
utes of the period to tie it.
But the Hawks pulled
away in the third with
three more goals for a 6-3
win.
The Hawks built their
lead with a pair of goals
in the first, with Brandon
Wedlock opening the
scoring three minutes in
and a shorthanded goal
by Stuckless.
Deman made it 3-0 with
a power play marker at
11:58, but the Stars got a
lift with a shorthanded
goal of their own three
minutes.
They cut the lead to one
with five minutes left in
the period before tying it
with under a minute left.
But the Hawks replied
with three goals in two
minutes in the third peri-
od to put the game and
the series away.
Sherwood fired the win-
ner with six minutes
remaining before
Stuckless and Darcy
McCutcheon scored 22
seconds apart to seal the
win.
Vlemmix had four more
assists in the win with
Finkbeiner and Joe
Nesbitt each getting a pair
and singles coming from
Justin LaPorte and
McCutcheon.
Exeter coach Dave
Revington said the Hawks
didn't have a good second
period in game four but
recovered in the third.
"We had some power
play opportunities and
didn't deal with that very
t
well. But their bench got played really well in the
short in the third and that third period."

SH junior girls volleyball
team plays in qualifier
STRATFORD - South Huron's junior girls volleyball
team had some tough games against Stratford Central
last week at their WOSSAA qualifier. The Panthers
ended up losing three straight 25-17, 25-23 and 25-21
to end their season.
Missing Alicia Harrison due to illness (one of the
team's main setters and passers) certainly played a
role in the loss. Several players stepped up with their
games to fill the void. Michelle Desjardine led her team
in the serving position with 10 points with strong
serves from Melissa Smith and Melissa Pertschy.
Kylen VanOsch and Smith were very strong at the
net with key spikes. VanOsch and Tristen Caldwell had
some big blocks throughout the day. Setters Chantal
Yearley, Breanna Thompson and Desjardine played
strongly.
SH junior coaches Deb Lord and Mark Laye want to
commend the junior girls for a successful year. The
team was eager to learn new systems and gelled very
well together. The squad was a joy to coach and it was
certainly a pleasure to see the improvement and
upgrade of skill level at the end of the season.
