Total Receipts 2141 head of cattle, 387 lambs and goats Summary Tuesday: The fed steers and heifers sold at prices $2 to $3 higher. Fancy steers & heifers sold 90-97 with sales to 110. Choice steers & heifers sold 80-85. 2nd cut steers & heifers sold 70-80. Top quality cows sold $2 to $3 higher with the balance of cows selling steady to last week. Thursday: The good veal sold $5 lower with the heavier and plain veal selling sharply lower. The light lambs sold at prices steady to last week with the rest of the lambs under pressure. Friday: The calves sold at prices $5 to $8 higher while the year- lings traded at prices $2 to $3 higher. Steers There were 447 steers on offer. Enoch Martin, Linwood consigned one limo steer weighing 1415 lbs which sold for 110. His overall offering of fourteen steers aver- aged 1480 lbs selling for an average price of 100.40. Four limo steers consigned by Brian Wideman, Gowanstown averaged 1246 lbs selling for an aver- age price of 91.68 with his top limo steer weighing 1295 lbs selling to Dominion Meat Packers for 97. Abner Bauman, Wroxeter consigned one limo steer weighing 1325 lbs which sold for 95.50. His overall consignment of six steers averaged 1423 lbs selling for an average price of 87.67. Heifers There were 238 heifers on offer. One limo heifer consigned by Hugh Love, Atwood weighed 1250 lbs selling to Norwich Packers for 97. His overall offering of four- teen heifers averaged 1263 lbs selling for an average price of 88.81. Sellers Farms, Bluevale consigned one char heifer weighing 1380 lbs which sold for 97. Their overall offering of twenty-four heifers averaged 1419 lbs selling for an average price of 82.89. One limo heifer consigned by Ben Rathwell, Brucefield weighed 1385 lbs selling for 90.25. Province announces funding TORONTO - At the Ontario Cattlemen's Association annual meet- ing Feb. 25 Premier Dalton McGuinty announced $74 million in provincial funding for live- stock producers. Of the amount $10 mil- lion will support a new cull -animal strategy and provide new markets for Canadian beef in the wake of the closing of the U.S. border to Canadian live- stock. Another $64 million will be available for all eligible farmers - including approximately $7 million for beef farmers - to ease the transition to a new generation of farm safety nets. McGuinty also announced an agreement by the premiers and terri- torial leaders to the estab- lishment of a national beef "strike force" to rebuild international confidence in Canadian and North American beef. He also said efforts will continue to reopen the U.S. border to Canadian beef and 118 full and part-time meat inspectors will be in place by April 1. Gary & Peter Douglas, Clifford consigned one hol cow weighing 1795 lbs which sold to Levinoff Meat Products for 25. Bulls There were 4 bulls on offer selling from 15 to 25. Bob Atkinson, Grand Valley consigned one limo bull weighing 1625 lbs which sold for 25. One black bull consigned by Keith Bridge, Palmerston weighed 1930 lbs selling to Levinoff Meat Products for 20. Veal There were 243 head of veal on offer. Beef: not enough to establish market. Holstein: 60-75 sales to 78. Plain Holstein: 30-45 sales to 50. Ikendale Farms, Walkerton consigned one hol veal steer weigh- ing 745 lbs which sold for 78 Their overall offering of five hol veal steers averaged 709 lbs selling for an average price of 75.63. One hol veal steer consigned by Clare Hayter, Thedford weighed 615 lbs selling to Millgrove Meat Packers for 78. His overall offer- ing of three hol veal steers averaged 682 lbs selling for an average price of 60.52. Mark Pfeffer, Clifford consigned six hol veal steers averaging 624 lbs which sold to Millgrove Meat Packers for 78. His overall offering of nine hol veal steers averaged 631 lbs selling for an average price of 77.66.
