(photo/submitted) Spirit of giving continues in Exeter EXETER - Although the holiday season has passed, the spirit of giving continues for many families in need in Exeter. At an event held Thursday, Associate Dealer Glenn Puchniak presented the Food Bank with $1500 raised through the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families The Family Tree Program.' During the holiday season at Canadian Tire stores across Canada, $5 from the sale of every full-size artificial tree was donated to the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families to benefit local charities. Canadian Tire Financial Services donated an additional $5 when tree purchases were made using a Canadian Tire card or an Options Mastercard. The Family Tree Program is a national fundraising initiative of the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families and has raised $836,000 this year to help provide food, shelter, clothing and essential goods to families facing difficult circumstances in communities right across the country. The program has raised more than $3.9 mil- lion since the program began five years ago. The holiday season is a special time of year full of giv- ing and hope. Through the Family Tree Program we are able to extend the warm spirit of the season and help our charitable partners at the Food Bank continue to provide critical services throughout the year to fami- lies in our community, says Puchniak. The Canadian Tire Foundation for Families is a chari- table organization with a clear objective; helping fami- lies when they need it most. Its mission is to provide a helping hand to families in need, ensuring that life's basic needs are met - food, shelter, clothing and essen- tial goods. In addition to community fundraising events and initiatives, the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families also provides a crisis response network, ready to go to work in times of natural disaster or crisis. World Day of Prayer - churches participating EXETER - Christians around the world will be focus- ing on the country of Panama during the annual World Day of Prayer service. Local residents are invit- ed to join in this worldwide event by attending a ser- vice at 7:30 p.m., on March 5 at Caven Presbyterian Church, 68 Main St. S., Exeter. This year's World Day of Prayer service, written by the women of Panama, reflects on the theme, `In Faith, Women Shape the Future.' The Panamanian women greet all those participating in this service by saying, `Buenos Dias,' and `Koboninio' which means, 'Good day!' Panama is one of the most ethnically diverse coun- tries in the world, and its fertile tropical climate sup- ports an abundance of plants and birdlife. It is also one of the most unequal countries in the world in terms of the disparity between rich and poor. Much of the economy and wealth is concentrated in the ser- vices sector that supports the Panama Canal, while much of the extreme poverty is found in isolated areas of the country and in indigenous communities. Participants attending the World Day of Prayer will not only be learning more about this beautiful country and its unique culture and heritage, but will also be joining Christians in more than 170 countries around the world and 2,000 communities across Canada who will gather together to pray and take action in solidar- ity with the people of Panama. The World Day of Prayer has its roots in an ecu- menical day of prayer organized by women in Canada and the United States in 1920. This event became the international World Day of Prayer in 1922, and Christians around the world began celebrating this event on the first Friday of March. In Canada, the World Day of Prayer is coordinated by the Women's Inter -Church Council of Canada. In this community, the coordinating group has represen- tation from the following churches: Precious Blood Parish (R.C.); Trivitt Anglican; Thames Rd. United; Exeter United; Bethel Pentecostal; Bethel Reform; Christian Reform; Presbyterian. For more information on the services being held in this community, please contact Carol Ann Keys at 235- 2509. Please note: rides are available from any of the participating churches; call the church office.
