Conservatives choosing candidate
HURON — Huron -Bruce Conservatives
are looking to choose a candidate for
their riding.
Conservatives will meet at 1 p.m. this
Saturday at the Wescast Community
Complex in Wingham, to nominate their
candidate for the upcoming federal elec-
tion.
Barb Fisher of Kincardine and David
Yates of Goderich are seeking the nomi-
nation.
"These are two strong individuals with
solid records of long-standing communi-
ty leadership," says Riding Association
president Brian Treble. "They have
been selling memberships and building
momentum for the new Conservative
Party. We are going to shake things up
in the next election."
Fisher was MPP for the former riding
of Bruce and most recently was chief of
staff to the Ontario Minister of
Citizenship with Responsibility for
Seniors.
Yates is in his third term as a council-
lor in the Town of Goderich and is a
teacher at Central Huron Secondary
School in Clinton.
"Before the Auditor General's report
announced the extent of Liberal corrup-
tion, most analysts expected a spring
election call.
"It doesn't matter. We have a united
party. We are building momentum. And
we will be ready to offer the people of
Huron -Bruce a fresh start," Treble said.
SH Hospital gets funding
HURON — The province announced
new funding last week for South Huron
Hospital and five other Huron -Bruce
Hospitals.
Under the funding, part of $385 million
in additional funding to hospitals in the
province, South Huron Hospital will
receive $332,000.
Other Huron -Bruce hospitals include:
Clinton Public, $305,000; Goderich's
Alexandra Marine, $456,000; South -
Bruce -Grey Health in Kincardine,
$902,000, Seaforth Community,
$200,000; and Wingham and District,
$265,000.
"This funding will improve access to
quality health care and reduce wait times
for important health care procedures in
Huron -Bruce," MPP Carol Mitchell said.
The government has outlined "change
strategies" for health care. They include:
• A sustainable financial footing for hos-
pitals ;
• A culture of accountability and
results;
• Creating strong community health
care services;
• A new emphasis on preventing illness
and promoting healthy living, including
reducing smoking and increasing rates of
physical activity.

ABCA issues flood safety monitoring bulletin
AUSABLE BAYFIELD — With below
freezing temperatures at night last week-
end, flow in creeks and rivers has
remained at low levels. There has been
some settling of snow pack and any
water release has generally been soaking
into the ground.
Weather forecasts are calling for rain-
fall and mild temperatures this week
with a return to below freezing overnight
tonight (Wednesday). There is the poten-
tial for more precipitation later in the
week.
Mild temperatures and rainfall are
expected to create some runoff with
smaller streams expected to rise to bank
full conditions. Water levels in larger
streams and rivers will be gradually
increasing as well although no serious
flooding problems are anticipated. River
ice break-up may occur later in the
week.
The greatest threat of flooding prob-
lems would come from rainfall amounts
of more than 25 mm in a 24 hour period
combined with temperatures which do
not drop below freezing at night.
