Panther girls come up short against Listowel
EXETER — The Panther girls lost a
hard fought series to Listowel two
games to one with a 6-4 loss Feb. 19
at the Rec Centre after winning in
overtime in Listowel Wednesday 3-2.
With St. Mikes a AAA team in the
playdowns, and two AA teams going
to WOSSAA, South Huron and
Wingham had a one game playoff
Tuesday to determine which
team would get the second mut
spot at WOSSAA.
After a scoreless first o
period Feb. 18 in Listowel,
the teams exchanged goals
in the second and third
periods.
Katie Stewart opened the
scoring at 9:34 of the period before
Listowel replied before the period
was over.
The Panthers took advantage of a
power play to take the lead in the
third period on a goal by Julie
Farquhar, but Listowel again tied it to
force the overtime.
But the Panthers would not be
denied. With the teams playing three
on three, Leanne Cronyn won it in the
first minute of overtime with a slap -
shot from the point that deflected off
a Listowel player and in.
Assistant coach Lynne Farquhar
described it as an excellent team
effort, with hustle from every player
and a great game from goalie Jolene
Unwin.
The Panthers killed off several five
on three power plays for Listowel.
Picking up assists in the win were
Emily Sararas with three and singles
from Kristen Reschke and Stewart.
The Panthers came out on the
wrong end of a 6-4 score Thursday,
but Farquhar said the team played its
heart out.

with 4:33 remaining.
Listowel took the lead again
in the first minute of the sec-
ond period, until goals by
Stewart and Leanne Cronyn put
the Panthers in front 3-2.
But a late goal by Listowel with just
30 seconds left in the period hurt
South Huron and left it 3-3 going into
the final period.
Stewart put the Panthers back in
the lead, with just over five minutes
remaining, driving to the net carrying
a pair of Listowel players to make it
4-3.
But three Listowel goals in the last
five minutes, the last into an empty
net, gave them the 6-4 win.
Getting assists in the effort were
Sararas and Kristin Ferguson with
two each and singles from Susie
McCann and Shelby Musser.

Junior girls volleyball team plays strongly in H -P playdowns
STRATFORD - South Huron's junior girls volleyball
players deserve a pat on the back for the way they
played at their Huron -Perth playdowns. The team gelled
perfectly throughout the day and displayed some fantas-
tic volleyball ability and team play.
The girls defeated St. Anne's three straight 25-21, 25-
21 and 26-24 to head into the semi-final round. St.
Anne's had defeated the Panthers three straight in
league play earlier in the season which made the win
that much sweeter for South Huron.
Kylen Van Osch was a "roof' at the net shutting down
any attacks. Tristen Caldwell, Melissa Smith, Melissa

Pertschy and VanOsch had some great spikes from set-
ters Alicia Harrison, Michelle Desjardine and Chantal
Yearley. VanOsch and Harrison led their team in the
serving position.
In the semi final round, South Iluron met a very strong
team from St. Mike's. SH's opponent had only lost one
game in all league matches. The junior girls again
played well but couldn't seem to get the flow they had in
the quarter finals. Van Osch, Smith and Mel McCann led
their team in the serving position.
