Officers patrolling Huron
County snowmobile trails

TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — Two officers
are out on the snowmo-
bile trails of Huron
County patrolling for mis-
behaviour such as
impaired driving, speed-
ing, driving without a
permit, trespassing and
riding off the trails.
Const. Dan Harness and
Const. Dave Gillan are
out on the trails to
enforce the Motorized
Snow Vehicles Act.
Gillan said most people
have been following the
rules so far this year,
although speeding has
been a factor.
Harness said most peo-
ple have been getting
their permits.
The officers are out in
full force on the week-
ends when the county
trails are more widely
used.
Gillan said it's impor-
tant for people to use
their common sense on
the trails and not to ven-
ture off them. Riding off
the trails can be danger-
ous and can also mean
losing your licence or
being charged with tres-
passing.
People are permitted to
ride on their own proper-
ty at their own risk.
On Feb. 11 the two-man
patrol checked trails in
Huron East through to
South Huron. Fifty-eight
sleds were stopped and
three men were charged.
Two were issued sum-
mons for driving a snow-
mobile with no insurance
while a third was
charged with failing to
carry his insurance par-
ticulars with him. Eight
others were issued warn-
ings about other trail
problems.
That night at 11:30 p.m.
an officer came across a
2004 Arctic Cat travelling
eastbound on Vanastra
Road in Bluewater. The
snowmobiler was stopped
and found with alcohol
on his breath. The man
failed the alcotest and
was taken for breath
tests that indicated he
was driving with twice
the amount of alcohol
allowed.
Kevin Jones, 27, of
Huron East has been
charged with driving a
motor vehicle with over
80 mgs. He was released
on a Promise to Appear
for court in Goderich in
March 2004.

EXETER — The Panther junior boys
were at home Feb. 9 versus St. Armes
and came away with a 45-21 win.

Spencer Baehisch five and Tyler Knip
six.
The team played a very strong defen-
sive game and dominated the boards.
The team improved to 7-0 with a 54-
31 win over Central Huron Feb. 11.
The team had an outstanding game
as they came out flying and cruised to
the victory.
Superb defence led to many offensive
opportunities in the excellent effort by
all.
Jordan Skinner led the attack with 20
points followed by Justin Knee and
Dustin Clifford with nine each.
The senior boys played an excellent
game defeating St. Annes 52-32. Pete
Clifford played a great game scoring 22

SH junior girls volleyball team
splits games in league play
EXETER - The South Huron junior
girls volleyball team played two
home league matches this past week.
The girls split both days winning
three out of six games respectively.
At Tuesday's match against St.
Anne's, the local squad started the
day very flat losing 12-25, 22-25 and
21-25. The team's passing and serv-
ing capabilities seemed to be the
team's demise.
Chantel Yearley led her team in the
serving position scoring nine points
while Melissa Pertschy added six
points.
Tristen Caldwell was hot at the net
with seven spikes.
In the second match of the day, the
girls swept their opponent from
Central Huron with scores of 25-12,
25-18 and 25-10. Kylen VanOsch
and Janine Malcolm led the team
serving eight points each. Michelle
Desjardine and Caldwell added five
apiece.
Thursday, South Huron played very
strongly against Listowel taking
three straight with scores of 25-18,
25-5 and 25-3.
Melissa Smith was unbeatable
notching 14 points in the serving
position. Alicia Harrison and
Breanna Thompson also helped the
win with precise serving. VanOsch
was powerful as middle hitter notch-
ing 14 spikes throughout the three
games.
Chantel Yearley filled in perfectly
as power hitter throughout the day.
In their second matchup of the day,
the Panthers met the league leader
from St. Mike's and played three
strong games but were defeated 25-
20, 25-18 and 25-12
Missed serves and blocks again
seemed to be the team's problem.
Smith again led her team in the
serving position with help from Van
Osch and Yearley.
Michelle Muller passed her best
game so far this year.
