Hawks gear up for Stars
By Pat Bolen
TIMES -ADVOCATE STAFF
EXETER — The Exeter
Hawks will open their
playoff run Friday night
versus Parkhill at 8:30
p.m. after finishing first in
the division despite losing
a 5-3 loss to Lucan Sunday
night.
The Hawks had already
sewn up first place with
three wins during the
week, finishing 28-7-3-2
for 61 points, three ahead
of Lucan. Facing a stretch
of four games in five
nights, the Hawks were in
Belmont Wednesday night.
Exeter opened a 2-0 lead
in the first period on goals
by Jason Stuckless and
Jeff Finkbeiner before the
Bombers cut the lead in
half with 30 seconds
remaining in the period.
But it was as close as
they would get as the
Hawks fired two more in
the second period from
Shawn Sherwood and
Matt Vlemmix.
The Bombers cut the
margin to two -goals mid-
way through the period,
but Justin Knee restored
the lead with three min-
utes left as the Hawks
came away with a 5-2 win.
Sherwood had a pair of
assists along with his goal,
with single helpers coming
from Stuckless, Justin
Knee and Darcy
McCutcheon.
After a scoreless first
period against Mt. Brydges
Friday night, the Hawks
fired four goals in the sec-
ond period with a lone
Bulldogs reply for a 4-1
lead.
Stuckless got the Hawks
started just over 30 sec-
onds in, and Justin
LaPorte made it 2-0 mid-
way through the period.
Stuckless's second of the
night on a power play
gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead
before the Bulldogs got on
the board.
Stuckless completed his
hat trick with just a
minute left in the period to
restore the three -goal
lead.
Mt. Brydges scored early
in the third to again cut
the lead, but Finkbeiner's
marker made it a 5-2 lead
as the teams continued to
trade goals for the rest of
the period.
The Hawks needed three
more goals from Pat
Clark, Mike Carnegie and
Scott Davies to finally sub-
due the Bombers 8-5.
Finkbeiner had a pair of
assists for three points on
the night, along with two
from Knee, and singles
from Chad Deman, Travis
Elder, Daryl Bourne,
Davies, Matt Vlemmix
The Hawks outshot the
Bulldogs 38-30 going four
for four on the power play
and giving up one goal on
three Mt. Brydges power
plays.
Saturday night back in
Belmont Exeter jumped
out to a 3-0 lead before
the game was 15 minutes
old and cruised to 6-2 win,
already having clinhed the
division with Lucan losing
Friday night.
Goals by Larry
Northover, a shorthanded
unassisted effort by
Deman and Brandon
Wedlock built the lead the
Hawks wouldn't surren-
der.
A pair of power play
goals by Stuckless and
Elder in the second made
it a 5-0 lead. The Bombers
struck back with a pair of
goals before the period
was over but it was all
they would get.
Knee capped the scoring
in the third for a 6-2 win.
Exeter coach Dave
Revington said the Hawks
won the games they had to
and despite a slow start
against the Bulldogs came
around when they needed
to.
Revington predicted a
tough series against the
Stars. Game two of the
series is scheduled for
Feb. 21 in N. Middlesex at
8:30 p.m. with games
three and four the follow-
ing weekend.
Exeter Hawk Chad Deman tries to avoid a hit from
JMt. Brydges player Jonathan Lobodzinski Friday night
in Exeter. Exeter won an 8-5 shootout and will face
N. Middlesex in the first round of the playoffs.
