Sherwoods split first two games
HENSALL — The Hensall Sherwoods
started their best of seven WOAA quar-
ter -final series with the Lucknow Lancers
on the weekend with a split of the first
two games.
Friday in Lucknow the Sherwoods won
5-2. Saturday back in Hensall the
Sherwoods lost 6-5 in overtime.
On Friday, the first period was score-
less. Chris Kennedy opened the scoring
five minutes into the second, on a setup
from Chris Downie.
With 40 seconds left in the period Mike
Johnson made it 2-0, on feeds from Chris
McDonald and Jeremy Geoffrey.
Lucknow got on the board four and
a half minutes into the third
to cut the lead in half. Three
goals in a seven minute
span gave the Sherwoods aHE

5-1 lead.
Jeff Glavin and Sean
McCann scored unassisted, while
Geoffrey scored from JR Davies and Steve
Vandenberk.
Lucknow rounded out the scoring on a
two-man power play with just 42 seconds
left.
Hensall outshot Lucknow 33-28. Scott
Wood won his third straight game of the
post season for the Sherwoods. Hensall
was zero for three on the power play,
while Lucknow scored once in seven
chances.
Saturday night the Sherwoods twice
watched two -goal leads evaporate before
succumbing in overtime.
The Lancers got on the board first scor-
ing on the power play 2:39 into the game.
Dave Farquhar knotted the game at one
just 40 seconds later, with assists going to
Jarrett Jeffrey and Jamie Cornish.
With 8:23 left in the first Geoffrey
scored from Nate Burns and Nick Regier.
Seventeen seconds into the second the
'Woods went up 3-1 as Downie tipped a
shot from Dan Taylor past the Lucknow
goaltender. Kennedy also assisted.
Lucknow scored the next two goals
before the period ended to make it 3-3
after two.
The Sherwoods took a 5-3 lead by the
six minute mark of the third. Regier
scored from Geoffrey and Derek
Mckinlay. Downie scored the fifth goal
from McCann and Mark Bell.
With 6:27 left the Lancers got to within
one. With just 39 seconds left in the third
and the goalie on the bench Lucknow tied
it up.
The overtime lasted just 20
seconds as Mark Stanley of Lucknow
scored his third goal of the night
to send Lucknow home with the
6-5 victory.
Lucknow was two for four on
the power play, while the
Sherwoods were zero for two.
Hensall was outshot 30-27. Andy Glavin
was in goal for Hensall.
NOTES: Hensall coach Randy Parker
said "This has the makings for a long
series as we seen Saturday night
Lucknow will not give up regardless of
the score."
"Both games were entertaining and I do
not expect anything different this week-
end."
"Stanley has scored four of Lucknow's
seven goals and may garner a little more
attention in upcoming games."
The rest of the series goes like this:
Friday in Lucknow, Saturday in Hensall,
Friday the 27th in Lucknow, Saturday the
28th in Hensall and Friday March 5th in
Lucknow. All games are at 8:30 p.m.
In other matchups Milverton and Elora
are tied 1-1 in their series, while
Palmerston vs Clinton and Shelburne vs
Durham will open this weekend.

Lucan Irish takes on
Mitchell in first round

LUCAN — The Lucan
Irish will open the playoffs
tonight (Wednesday)
against the Mitchell
Hawks at 7:45 p.m. after
finishing second in the
division behind the Exeter
Hawks despite a 5-3 win
in Exeter Sunday night.
Lucan finished with a
26-8-4-2 record for 58
points behind Hagersville
which finished first overall
with 64 points and
Tavistock and Exeter each
with 61.
Mitchell beat out N.
Middlesex for third in the
division with two wins to
finish the season, includ-
ing a 4-3 win at home
against Lucan Feb. 13.
Wednesday night against
N. Middlesex, two goals in
each period was all the
offence the Irish needed.
Lucan goalie Joe Dobbie
stopped all 31 shots he
faced for his second
shutout of the year.
A pair of goals two min-
utes apart in the first peri-
od by Trevor Smith and
Matt Read gave Lucan a 2-
0 lead and a shorthanded
goal by Dan Kudirka just
20 seconds in the middle
frame made it a 3-0 lead.
Lucan increased its lead
to four goals four minutes
later on Jeff Silver's goal.
Trying to get back in the
game, the Stars had sever-
al chances in the third
period but couldn't beat
Dobbie, including a short-
handed breakaway
chance Dobbie got a toe in
front of to preserve the
shutout.
Smith made it 5-0 with
his second of the game on
an unassisted effort before
Brady Campbell capital-
ized on a power play for
the 6-0 final.
Kyle Roth and Dan
Crowley each had a pair of
assists, with singles from
Ryan Brooks, Adam
Thomson, Tom Burns,
Tyler Silver, George Henry
and Mike Burns.
Game two of the series
will go Feb. 20 at 8:30
p.m. with game three back
in Lucan at 7:45 p.m.
Exeter curling results
ST. MARYS — The Mutual Gore Schoolboy and
Schoolgirl competition was held in St. Marys Feb. 7-8.
The boys won their first game and then lost two
straight which put them out of the competition.
The girls team however, won the whole competition
taking the "A" side.
The Gore Mutual Schoolgirl curling regional compe-
tition was held in St. Marys Feb. 7 and 8 with eight
teams competing.
The South Huron District High School team of Sarah
Miller, Lindsey Rundle, Erin Robinson and Stacey Pfaff
were successful in winning the "A" side to advance to
provincials.
The provincial competition will be held at the Galt
Country Club in Cambridge Feb. 21 to 23.
The girls beat teams from Northern C.I. & V.S., East
Elgin S.S. and Ancaster High School.
