Strong showing by junior volleyball team
GODERICH - The South Huron junior girls volleyball
team displayed some great skill and determination dur-
ing its recent league play, winning five out of six games.
With several missed practice and game opportunities
throughout January due to inclement weather, the
squad still performed to its best ability.
South Huron defeated its first opponent from Mitchell
three straight games.
Strong serving, big plays at the net and aggressive play
were the winning aspects of South Huron's sweep over
Mitchell. Kylen VanOsch led her team in the serving
position notching 15 points in two games. Janine
Malcolm, Melissa Pertschy, Melissa Smith and Chantel
Yearley were also strong in the serving position. Van
Osch and Tristen Caldwell played smartly at the net.
The local juniors faced some problems in their second
series against Goderich. Goderich's hard serves caused
some poor passing but again aggressive plays and quick
thinking solved the problem. South Huron defeated its
opponent by scores of 25-9, 25-17 and lost a close game
27-25 after coming back from a deficit.
Michelle Desjardine, Alicia Harrison, Maggie Roberts
and Breanna Thompson led their team in the serving
position. Melissa Smith was unbeatable at the net with
several big hits from sets by Thompson. Smith should
also be noted for her quick thinking and movement in
every game. VanOsch and Roberts also had some strong
hits while Pertschy shut down her opposition with big
blocks.
The junior girls hosted St. Armes and Central Huron
yesterday and host Listowel and Stratford St. Mike's on

in Mitchell vs. Mitchell Tweens
gives the Irish a 24-7-4-2
record for 54 points, one
behind the Exeter Hawks.
Lucan has three games
remaining in the regular
season including a make
up game Sunday night in
Exeter at 7:30 p.m.
With a minute left and
Lucan clinging to the 7-6
lead Belmont got the
equalizer with an empty
net goal to force overtime
where neither team could
break the deadlock.
After Tom Burns put
Lucan on the board just
30 seconds into the first
period, the Bombers
replied just over a minute
later tying it 1-1.
But three goals in three
minutes built a 4-1 lead
for Lucan, on goals by
Dan Kudirka, Matt
Thompson and Jeff
Silver.
But a power play late in
the period gave Belmont
an opportunity and they
took advantage with six
seconds left, cutting the
lead to 4-2.
Paced by the late goal,
the Bombers came out
strong in the second, fir-
ing three straight goals in
10 minutes to take a 5-4
lead.
But late in the period, it
was Lucan's turn on the
power play, and two
goals in 25 seconds put
them up 6-5.
Nursing the one -goal
lead in the third, Lucan
ran into a string of penal-
ties leaving them down
two men for four min-
utes.
But several saves by
goalie Joe Dobbie, who
also got some help with a
shot off the goal post,
kept it a 6-5 game.
Lucan penalty killers
kept Belmont to the out-
side, allowing them few
chances to penetrate to
the net.
But after not being able
to score with the two-
man advantage, the
Bombers broke through
at 10:06 to tie it again at
6-6.
The tie lasted only three
minutes though, as Matt
Thompson took a pass
from the corner and
fired it past Belmont
goalie Chris Hall for the
go ahead goal.
But the lead wouldn't
hold up, as the Bombers
jammed in the equalizer
with their goalie pulled.
Dan Crowley and
Charlie Moir each had a
pair of assists in the tie,
with singles from Adam
Thompson, Tom Burns,
Kyle Roth and Ryan
Giffen.
N. Middlesex will be in
town tonight
(Wednesday) at 7:45 p.m.
and Lucan visits Mitchell
Feb. 13 at for an 8:30
p.m. start before wrap-
ping the regular season
Sunday night in Exeter.
