Hensall Sherwoods drown
River Rats three straight
HENSALL — The Hensall
Sherwoods eliminated the
Georgian Bay River Rats with a
convincing 9-2 victory Saturday
night in Hensall.
The Sherwoods won the series
3-0. They now await their next
opponent, which in all
probability will be
Lucknow.
The River Rats got
on the board first
with a power play
goal a minute into
the first. Hensall
and Chris Kennedy.
The 'Rats had a four minute five
on three power play to start the
third and capitalized two minutes
into the period to cut the deficit to
5-2.
Mark
came back strong with
four goals in a four minute span.
Jeff Glavin scored first from
Dave Farquhar. Nate Burns
scored from Jeremy Geoffrey and
Nick Regier. Chris McDonald
made it 3-1 on assists from Jeff
Glover and JR Davies.
Farquhar rounded out the out-
burst with a unassisted short-
handed marker.
There was only one goal in the
second and it came from captain
Chris Downie, from Sean McCann
Bell scored shorthanded
at 5:16 to make it 6-2,
with Burns and
Geoffrey getting the
helpers. Glover made it
7-2 as he went five hole
on River Rat goalie Chad
Ford. McDonald and
Davies assisted.
With just under four minutes left
Downie scored on a pass from
Regier.
Thirty four seconds later Downie
completed the hat trick on a pass
from Kennedy. Hensall out shot
Georgian Bay 63-45.
Scott Wood had another solid
outing winning his second game of
the post season. Hensall had 16
minors to seven for the River Rats.
NOTES: Hensall coach Randy
Parker said it was a solid game all
around for the Sherwoods as each
line scored at least two goals.
"We are going to have to cut
down on the retaliatory penalties
or we are going to have a short
playoff run. Our penalty killing is
getting the job done killing off ten
of twelve chances on Saturday, as
well as scoring two shorthanded
goals."
"Lucknow will be a tough test,
they are very quick and disci-
plined. They have defeated us
twice this year and will be looking
to avenge their opening round loss
to us last season."
"If we play like we are capable it
should be a very good series."
In other playoff matchups
Clinton is up 2-0 on Ripley and
Durham defeated Mildmay in
three games.
Elora defeated Tavistock three
straight, as did Milverton over
Listowel.
Shelburne took four games to
beat Wingham and Palmerston
won its series 3-0 over Monkton.

EXETER — The
Panther girls hockey
team completed their
regular season with a
pair of wins last week to
finish with a record of 10-
1.
South Huron rolled over
Central Huron 9-0 Feb. 3
before winning a hard
fought 4-2 game over
Listowel Feb. 5.
The Panthers will face
Listowel in a best two out
of three series starting
Feb. 12 in Exeter.
The Panthers faced off
against visiting Central
Huron Feb. 4 and quickly
took control with four
goals in the first period,
with a pair from Kristin
Ferguson and singles
from Julie Farquhar and
Jessica Bickell.
South Huron kept up
the pressure in the sec-
ond period firing four
more goals off the sticks
of Leanne and Kelly
Cronyn, Emily Sararas
and Shelby Musser.
Katie Stewart capped
the scoring with the
Panthers' lone goal of the
third as they cruised to
the 9-0 win.
Picking up assists in the
win were Meaghan
Ellison, Sararas and
Brittany Schroeder each
with a pair and singles
from Kristin Reschke,
Jenna Phillips, Kelly
Cronyn, Bickell, Michelle
McCann, Stewart,
Ferguson and Mudge.
The Panthers had a
tougher test Thursday
against Listowel, which
Panthers assistant coach
Lynne Farquhar
described as a big physi-
cal team.
But Stewart put the
Panthers ahead 1-0 in the
first with an unassisted
effort, a lead which stood
until Listowel tied it in the
second.
But it only remained
tied for a minute before
South Huron again took
the lead on another goal
by Stewart, assisted by
Ferguson.
Listowel struck back
four minutes later mak-
ing it a 2-2 game, but
with 49 seconds left in
the period, Stewart com-
pleted her hat trick with
an assist from Sararas.
The Panthers got some
insurance late in the
third, with Stewart pick-
ing up her fourth point of
the game, setting up
Sararas for the 4-2 final.
Farquhar said the
Panthers outhustled
Listowel for most of the
game, with Mudge and
Unwin, who split the
game, both making big
saves and that Stewart
was on fire with her four
point game.
It will be a 2 p.m. start
time for game one of the
series Thursday, with
game two in Listowel to
be announced.
Game three if necessary
will be in Exeter Feb. 19
at 2 p.m.
