Quit Smoking 2004 contest
ONTARIO — Daily
smokers in Ontario who
want to quit smoking now
have a great incentive —
the chance to win a new
car in the Quit Smoking
2004 Contest.
Now in it's forth year ,
the province -wide con-
test is designed to
help smokers set a
quit date, prepare
themselves and
then stop smok-
ing by March 1,
2004 for at least
one month.
The contest is open to
all Ontario residents who
are daily smokers and are
19 years of age or older.
Entries must be received
by midnight Feb. 29, 2004,
and smokers must quit
smoking by March 1st and
remain smoke free until
March 31st to qualify for
contest prizes.
This year's grand prize,
sponsored by Pfizer, is a
Mini Cooper, other region-
al winners could receive a
Toshiba home theatre sys-
tem. Winners will be ran-
domly chosen on April 1,
2004 and contacted within
two weeks.
Contest participants are
required to enlist the help
of a non-smoking buddy
who will give them support
along the way. Buddies of
confirmed winners will
also receive cash prizes.
About 22 per cent of
Huron County residents
are daily smokers,
and almost half of
them want to
quit. The prob-
lem is that nico-
tine is a very
serious addic-
tion, making it
very difficult to
quit. The contest
gives smokers an extra bit
of encouragement with a
chance to win rewards.
Whether the contest partic-
ipants win a prize or not,
everyone who quits —
even if it is only for a
month — comes out a win-
ner.
Smoke free environ -
ments also help smokers
quit. On Sept. 4, 2004,
Huron County will be going
smoke free. A bylaw has
been passed that will
require all public places
and workspaces to be 100
per cent smoke free except
for long term care and psy-
chiatric facilities. This
bylaw was developed to
help protect residents and
workers in Huron County
from the harmful effects of
exposer to second hand
smoke. To assist work-
places in becoming smoke
free, the Health Unit is
offering a workshop on
March 25, 2004 at the
Health and Library
Complex in Clinton.
If you would like a regis-
tration form fro the Health
Unit workshop, or a con-
test registration form, call
Sandra Feltz at 482-3416
or 1-877-837-6143.
