POLICE BRIEFS Cruiser damaged in white out BLUEWATER - On Jan. 28= a Huron OPP cruiser was involved in a three vehicle crash on Bluewater Highway south of Bayfield near Staffa Road in Huron County. At approximately 10:30 a.m. an officer was checking a closed road for stranded motorists and road conditions when a white out area was entered. Once the officer got into the white out zone the officer didn't spot a stopped blue Ford Aerostar van in the middle of the road. The officer ran into the rear of the van causing front end damaged to the cruiser. The cruiser roof lights were activated and the officer got out and spoke to the driver of the van. The officer got back into the cruiser and within seconds was struck from behind by a Courtney Candy truck that had just come out of his driveway a short distance away. In all three cases the vehicles were southbound on the highway at the time of the crashes and none of the occu- pants were injured. The officer learned from the driver of the van that he had gone around two road closures signs previous to the white out area. As a result of this information the 62 - year -old driver of the van from Windsor has been charged with driving on a closed highway under the Highway Traffic Act. The Huron OPP is warning the public to obey the road closure signs. The roads may look good in town or even in front of your residence but down the road the winds can and maybe causing white outs. The roads are closed because of the danger to the public and also to allow emergency road crews the opportunity to remove the snow to avoid collisions. Secondly, the OPP notify the media centers quickly with the information about roads being closed and when the roads are opened the media are again contacted. For listeners in Huron we call the "The New PL" TV sta- tion and CKNX radio at 101.7 FM and 920 AM. Many of the roads in the county are down to one lane due to the drifting snow. Large snow blowers are being used by the MTO and County Road Department to remove large volumes of snow from the roadway. This will be a dangerous situation because of the white outs caused by the blowing wind. If you don't see the blower the blades can rip through a car within seconds, which could lead to serious harm to you or the occupants of your vehicle. The OPP are asking all motorists to listen for and obey the road closure signs and warnings.
