POLICE BRIEFS
Two
arrested for
theft of
tractor
SOUTH HURON —
Huron OPP received a
call from a farmer on
Airport Line in South
Huron at 3 a.m. Jan. 20
who said two people
were stealing his trac-
tor.
Officers quickly
responded and one
marked cruiser arrived
as the tractor was leav-
ing the farmers
laneway. The two occu-
pants refused to stop
and attempted to flee
down the road. The
officer attempted to
stop the tractor, which
travelled approximately
two kilometres before
the driver lost control,
entered a ditch and
struck a tree. The two
men inside the tractor
fled on foot and were
captured a short time
later. Canine assisted
by tracking the two to
where they were
caught.
The stolen tractor was
valued at $50,000 and
received extensive
damage to the front
when it left the road-
way. The damage to the
front axle, engine com-
partment and drive
transmission could be
up to $10,000.
Christopher Bregman,
32, of Huron East, has
been charged with
flight from police, theft
over $5,000 and pos-
session of property
obtained by crime.
Joseph Munzer, 21,
also of Huron East, has
been charged with theft
over $5,000 and pos-
session of property
obtained by crime. He
was released and will
attend court in Exeter
March 25.
Telemarketer
scam
The Western Region
OPP Criminal
Investigation Unit is
advising of a potential
phone scam after investi-
gating a suspicious inci-
dent Jan. 16.
Investigators discovered
a male caller who stated
he was a member of
Hydro One contacted the
potential victim. The sus-
pect tried to obtain the
MasterCard number by
stating the citizen would
receive a free cell phone if
they provided their card
number.
The alert citizen hung
up on the would-be con
artist and called police
immediately. Police dis-
covered Hydro One had
no such promotion ongo-
ing and further discov-
ered all the contact num-
bers the suspect provided
were bogus.
Western Region
Criminal Investigation
Detective Inspector Don
Birrell reminds everyone,
"if it sounds too good to
be true, it is." He com-
mends the actions of the
intended victim and
encourages others to do
the same.
