Hawks hammer Mt. Brydges Bulldogs 8-1 and 6-1
By Pat Bolen

EXETER — The Exeter Hawks pounded out a
pair of victories against the Mt. Brydges Bulldogs
last week by a combined 12-2 score, with an 8-1
win on the road Jan. 20 before taking the rematch
6-1 in Exeter Friday night.
But the Hawks came up short Saturday night
against the visiting Thamesford Trojans by a 5-1
score.
The Hawks now have a 23-6-3-2 record for 51
points, three up on Lucan and four back of
Hagersville which leads with 55.
Exeter was on the board quickly Tuesday night,
with Jeff Finkbeiner opening the scor-
ing just over a minute in.
The Bulldogs tied it before the period
was over, but it was all Exeter after that
as they scored two in the second period
and three more in the third on the way
to the 6-1 win.
Exeter chased Bulldogs goalie Brendan
Keddy in the third for Steve Lobodzinski.
Henny Pfaff made it a 2-0 lead with seven
minutes left in the second and Daryl Bourne gave
the Hawks a three -goal bulge with under a minute
remaining.
The Hawks kept up the pressure in the third with
Finkbeiner picking up his second of the game and
Jason Stuckless and Dan Moir firing the final two
Exeter goals.
Bourne had two assists, as did Justin Knee with
singles from Joe Nesbitt, Travis Elder, and Shawn
Sherwood.
The Bulldogs were in town looking to even the
score Friday night, but the Hawks never gave them
a chance to get in the game, firing six unanswered
goals in the first period and cruising to the 8-1
win.
A Bulldogs power play early in the first gave
them a chance for some momentum, but it was
the Hawks taking advantage, with Stuckless scor-
ing shorthanded to open the floodgates.
It was the Hawks on the power play two minutes
later and they made no mistake, with Knee firing it
home for the 2-0 lead.
The Hawks offence was well spread around in
the period, getting goals from six different players,
as Evan Lutz, Elder, Sherwood and Bourne hit the
scoresheet as Exeter built their 6-0 lead.
A pair of goals by Finkbeiner in the second, the
first on a power play and the second another
shorthanded effortfinished the scoring for Exeter.
A lone Bulldogs effort midway though the period
was the only shot to beat Exeter goalie Justin
Hayter, who faced 28 shots, with Exeter firing 44.
The Hawks went 3-11 on the power play and
killed all but one of the Bulldogs nine man -advan-
tages.
Picking up assists in the game were Sherwood
with three, Stuckless and Justin LaPorte with a
pair each and singles from Pat Clark, Brandon
Wedlock, Scott Davies, Darcy McCutcheon,
Michael Carnegie and Finkbeiner.
Saturday night it was Thamesford who
jumped to an early lead and rolled to a 5-1
win, as they scored two in the first, one in the
second and two more in the third.
Justin Knee was the only Hawk able to get
anything by Trojan goalie Ben Higgs, breaking the
shutout in the third.
Exeter outshot Thamesford 38-28 and was zero
for two on the power play, and gave up two goals
on nine Trojan powerplays.
Exeter coach Dave Revington said it was a solid
effort all around against Mt. Brydges, but the
Hawks just didn't have it against the Trojans.
"Thamesford was a little lethargic the last time
they came in and we beat them 6-1. I guess it was
our turn this time. They're too good a team to
come in flat again."
Revington said the entire team was flat against
the Trojans but thought goalie Cam Becker played
well. "He's quick and moves well laterally and is
aggressive on the puck."
Exeter has two games these week, visiting
Belmont Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. before
Lucan visits Friday night at 8:30 p.m.

Games. Coach Kathy McLlwain said it was a great
skate and she was thrilled.
The Masters team, "The Classiques" are back
again for their fifth season with some new skaters
added to the team this year.
The team's first skate placed them fifth, taking
them to the silver final, but an unfortunate fall
left them fifth overall in the final.

Judges ordinals -second skate: 7,4,4,6,6,5,5.
McLlain said nerves and being the first skate of
the season were a factor in the results and the
team is quite capable of skating a better perfor-
mance.
The Exeter Adult Classics are back and their
first skate was strong and clean placing them
first and taking them to the gold final to finish
fifth overall.
An unfortunate fall at the end of the program
may have lost the bronze medal but overall
McLlain was extremely pleased with the Adult
performance.
