22 Exeter Times—Advocate Wednesday, January 21, 2004 Announcements Ontario drivers now required to yield to buses as they merge into traffic Yield to Bus legisla- tion intended to improve transit flow and fight gridlock TORONTO — You're going to have to "Yield to the Bus.' That's the new message going out to drivers in Ontario. Under a new law, drivers must yield to buses as they pull away from bus bays and re-enter adjacent traffic lanes. The legislation will make it easier for buses to merge back into traffic and to keep on schedule. The new law, effective Jan. 2, applies where public transit services display the Yield to Bus sign on the back of buses. Ontario enacted the new law in response to recommendations by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA) and municipal transit systems. Reducing the time it takes for buses to merge into traffic improves transit flow and helps attract new riders by making tran- sit services more reliable and effi- cient, especially during rush hours. Similar legislation is already in place in British Columbia and Quebec, as well as a number of states, including California, Washington State, Florida and Oregon. Buses will display the Yield to Bus sign, which shows an inverted triangle (the standard for yield signs), and a bus with its left turn signal flashing, on the back. Transit agencies may also place signs on the rear of their buses with the message "Yield to the Bus" to draw attention to the new legislation and the yield to bus sign. A public awareness campaign consisting of posters, information sessions and radio spots is planned to help advise all road users and the enforcement community about the new Yield to Bus law. The new legislation applies to all municipal transit and GO Transit buses that display the yield to bus sign on the rear of the bus above the left turn signal. When a bus displaying the yield to bus sign sig- nals its intention to pull out from a bus bay by activating the left turn signal, drivers approaching from the rear in the adjacent lane are required to slow down or stop to allow the bus to re-enter the lane, unless it is unsafe to do so. Yield to Bus infractions carry a fine of $90. For more information on the new Yield to Bus law see www.e- laws.gov.on.ca.
