Family Ties winter programs begin
By Debra Toonk
T -A CO-OP STUDENT
EXETER — After a successful fall pro-
gram the Rural Response for Healthy
Children (RRHC) is now running its win-
ter Family Ties program.
After the drop in centre in Seaforth
was closed the RRHC wanted to still be
able to offer its programs to Huron
County. Now, to ensure that everyone in
the community has the opportunity to
attend a workshop, the programs have
become mobile in order for families
without a mode of transportation to
attend.
This season, Family Ties will consist
of four programs that will make their
way through various towns in the coun-
ty on a weekly and bi-weekly basis,
these programs include: A Mother's
Journey, Make and Take Cooking,
Morning Out, and Nobody's Perfect.
A Mother's Journey invites women to
the world of self-discovery through self-
care, journalling, problem solving,
dream work by accepting themselves
for who they are. Women are encour-
aged to see themselves and their fami-
lies through a new perspective.
Make and Take Cooking is for moms,
dads and children that teaches basic
cooking skills. Some sessions involve
preparing food to take home and cook
while others include preparing, cooking
and eating the food together as a fami-
ly.
Morning Out is designated for parents
with children ages 0-6 years. Some ses-
sions are attended by a nurse from the
Huron County Health Unit where topics
such as teething, diaper rash and safe
sleeping positions are discussed.
Alternate weeks discuss topics such as
temper tantrums, routines and toilet
training.
Nobody's Perfect is the program that
is currently being held in Exeter. This
program is offered in partnership with
the Huron County Health Unit where
parents are helped in developing an
understanding of their children's safety,
behavior and discipline as well as their
physical and emotional development.
Parents are encouraged to have confi-
dence in their parenting abilities as they
learn to recognize and build on their
own strengths and existing coping
skills. Its next session will be January
27 at the new Exeter Youth Center.
Program coordinator Sally Van
Doornik says the programs will help
families learn basic skills with the fami-
ly emphasis.
"Make and Take Cooking for example
teaches families the basics of cooking
and how to budget for meals by learn-
ing it is most affordable to make your
own meals other than ordering take-
out," says Van Doornik. "That way, par-
ents are also modeling good examples
for their children by eating dinner
together at the table."

register for Nobody's Perfect or any
