Victim Services of Huron County HURON COUNTY - Victim Services of Huron County is a new program start- ing in Huron County. Victim Services of Huron County is a community based service, which is dedicated to provid- ing short term emotional support, practical assistance and community referral to victims of crime, trauma and tragic circumstance in partnership with community and emergency ser- vices. Community volunteers provide for the victim's immediate needs and supply referrals to existing community services if longer term care is required. Funding for the program is provided through the Ontario Victim Services Secretariat of the Ministry of the Attorney General. Crisis assistance will be given by spe- cially trained community volunteers who are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. With the consent of the victim, the attending police or emergency per- sonnel call on the volunteers to render whatever emotional support or practi- cal assistance is needed. Support will be provided for; abuse of the elderly, accidents, assault, break & enter, criminal harassment, death notifica- tion, disaster, domestic violence, fatali- ties, fire, family occurrence, homicide, missing persons/abductions, personal crisis, robbery, sexual assault, stalk- ing, sudden death, suicide or attempt- ed suicide. The objectives of the service are to: lessen the trauma of being victimized, to assist police and emergency services in meeting the needs of victims, to help victims cope with the impact of crime, trauma and/or tragic circumstances, to assist victims in accessing appropriate support services in our community, to provide an opportunity for community members to become more involved in dealing with the effects of crime and victimization and to educate communi- ty members and promote victim assis- tance in Huron County. Victim Services of Huron County is a non profit organization with a Board of Directors and staff, Tanya Verburg, Executive Director and Shelley Dorey, Coordinator of Volunteer Services. The program is looking for volunteers and will provide training beginning early 2004. If you would like more information about the program and/or are interested in becoming a volunteer please contact the office at (519) 524- 4108 or email vshc@bellnet.ca.
