These preventable incidents reconfirm the need for Snowmobile Safety Week and the importance of making smart choices while riding a snowmobile. According to the OFSC, respon- sible choices include embrac- ing Zero Tolerance (don't drink and ride); reducing speed to drive within ability and conditions; and riding with care and control. They also involve avoiding dangerous ice and open water, and the legal requirement of wearing a helmet. "Most snowmobile fatalities are espe- cially tragic because they are usually preventable if smart choices are made up front," said OFSC president Dennis Burns. "On behalf of all snowmobilers, the OFSC sends its sympathy to each family for the loss of their loved one." One smart choice is to buy a permit and ride on OFSC snowmobile trails when they are open, because statistical- ly, these trails are among the safest places to operate a snowmobile. When trails are not open, it normally means conditions are too dangerous to ride anywhere. This past weekend, some snowmobilers chose to ride anyway and a few paid with their lives. "The OFSC invests millions of dollars each winter to provide access to snow- mobile trails for riders who purchase a Snowmobile Trail Permit. We also offer extensive snowmobile safety education and tips for making smart choices," con- cluded Burns. "When riders choose to ride off -trail or to ignore this information, they have to accept full responsibility for the conse- quences of their actions." Snowmobiling is an inherently risky off-road activity occurring in an uncontrollable and unpre- dictable natural setting. Riders go snowmobiling at their own risk and must always expect the unexpected. So the OFSC position is that any riders who are not prepared to follow the pub- lished "List of Assumptions for OFSC Trail Use" at www.sledsmart.com are not welcome on OFSC trails because they may endanger themselves and other riders. The OFSC is committed to promoting safe, responsible riding on Ontario snowmobile trails by continuously improving safety standards, programs and enforcement through proactive leadership, stakeholder partnerships, public education and driver training.
