EXETER — Led by four
points from Jeff
Finkbeiner and three from
Shawn Sherwood, the
Exeter Hawks blanked
Thamesford 6-0 Friday
night in Exeter.
The Hawks visited Port
Stanley Jan. 10 and came
away with a single point
after a 3-3 tie with the
Lakers.
The win and the tie gives
the Hawks a 21-5-3-1
record for 46 points.
Exeter played what
coach Dave Revington
described as a solid effort
from their whole lineup.
The Hawks had all the
offence they would need
against Thamesford just
seven seconds into the
game on a goal by
Sherwood assisted by
Finkbeiner.
"We got some momen-
tum early and it carried
us," said Revington.
Two power play goals
before the period was over
built a 3-0 lead for the
Hawks, with an unassisted
effort by Finkbeiner giving
them a 2-0 lead at 17:10.
With just over a minute
left in the period,
Finkbeiner picked up his
third point of the game,
combining with Sherwood
on Justin Knee's goal.
Exeter kept up the pres-
sure in the second period
and was rewarded with
three more goals.
Joe Nesbitt fired the
Hawks third power play
goal of the night midway
through the period, before
Sherwood and Chad
Deman added two more
before the period was
over.
Exeter goalie Justin
Hayter shut the door in
the third period for his
second shutout of the year
and Pat Clark and Dan
Moir picked up assists in
the win.
Exeter outshot
Thamesford 39-26, going
three for six on the power
play and killing all four
Trojan power plays.
With goalie Kellen Hefley
rehabbing his knee injury,
the Hawks have acquired
goalie Cam Becker from
Wingham.
Becker started his first
game against Port Stanley
and played well according
to Revington.
Exeter was on the board
almost as quick as the
previous night, with Mike
Carnegie scoring with just
30 seconds gone in the
opening period.
But Port Stanley replied
with a power play goal
two minutes later leaving
it tied at the end of one.
The Lakers fired the only
marker of the second to
take a 2-1 lead into the
last period.
The lead didn't hold up
long however as Matt
Vlemmix tied it two min-
utes into the period.
The Hawks retook the
lead with seven minutes
left on a goal by Knee, but
couldn't hang on for the
win as the Lakers got the
equalizer with just over a
minute left, and overtime
solved nothing, despite the
Hawks outshooting Port
Stanley 7-3.
Revington said Knee has
played better recently.
"He's applied himself
more and he has the skill
to do a lot of things, so
we're pretty happy with
him."
Neither team had many
chances with the man
advantage, Port Stanley
going one for two, and the
Hawks scoreless on the
power play. Exeter out -
shot the Lakers 39-32.
Exeter has a single game
this week with Mitchell
visiting Friday night at
8:30 p.m. with Revington
expecting another tough
game.
"They're a team that
plays the same way all the
time. They work really
hard and like to
forecheck. You know
you'll get a solid effort out
of them."

LUCAN — The Lucan
Irish won two of three
games last week to
improve their record to
20-6-2-2 for 44 points, to
close within two points of
the Exeter Hawks for
first in the division.
Lucan took a 4-1 win
over Mt. Brydges
Wednesday, and doubled
Belmont 8-4 Saturday,
before dropping a 5-3
decision in Lambeth
Sunday night. Lucan sits
five back of league lead-
ing Hagersville, with 49
points.
Two goals in the first
period against the
Bulldogs put Lucan in
front to stay, with George
Henry and Ryan Giffen
supplying the offence
with a goal apiece.
After a scoreless second
period, Mark Read gave
Lucan a three goal lead
early in the third with an
assist from Matt Read.
Mt. Brydges cut it to a
two -goal lead with seven
minutes left, but Trevor
Smith sealed the win
with seven seconds left.
Smith also picked up an
assist in the win as did
Mark Read and Dan
Crowley.
It was a wide open first
period in Belmont with
six goals scored, four of
them by Lucan, with a
power play marker and
two shorthanded goals.
Mike Burns opened the
scoring for Lucan with
the man advantage, but
the Bombers replied just
seconds later to even the
score, before taking the
lead two minutes later.
But Lucan built a 4-2
lead before the period
was over on goals by
Mark Read, and short-
handed efforts by Tom
Burns and Mark Flood.
Three more goals from
Jason Kyle, Mark Flood
and Tom Burns, with a
single reply from the
Bombers left Lucan with
a 7-4 lead going into the
third where the teams
traded single goals,
Lucan's marker by Kyle
Smith.
Picking up three assists
in the win was Dan
Kudirka. Tom Burns had
an assist to go with his
two goals with Giffen,
Mike Burns and Mark
Read having two point
nights.
Jamie Jongsma and Pat
Flood each had an assist
with Nick Chelmack get-
ting the win in net.
Despite taking a two -
goal lead in the first peri-
od against Lambeth,
Lucan couldn't hold on as
the Lancers fired two in
the second period and
three more in the third
for the 5-3 win.
Jongsma and Matt Read
each had a goal and an
assist, while Henry added
a single marker. Tom
Burns and Giffen each
added an assist.
