My Trip to Europe •
(By Rev. Father L. Marchand)
There are still some windmills left
in Hollond, but they are gradually
being replaced by modern electric
machinery, Contrary to our belief;
the people of Holland generally do
not wear wooden shoes. They are,
however, still worn by some fisher-
men in -certain parts of the Nether-
lands. I visited some of these places,
and thought it interesting to see the
inhabitues attired in their national
costumes and wearing seabots. All
the homes in Holland are exception-
ally clean. There are no dirty, wom,
en to be seen. The people are good
and kind. I do not understand their
language. All the newspapers, rest-
aurant menus, and street signs are in
Dutch. Still. I managed very well -
1 toured through Amsterdam in a
motor boat. The. Queen's palace
stands in a public square, The chur-
ches, once Catholic, are very beauti-
ful. Since the reformation, they have
been .occupied by the Protestants.
Calvin stripped these churches down
to the bare walls. I saw the church
in which Queen Juliana was crowned,
Rembrant, the great .painter lived in
this City, and I saw some of his bees
utiful paintings. There is one very
interesting street in this tits,. It is
very narrow and winding, and is the
collecting point of adventurers, sot-

Palaces. I spent some time on the
battlefields of Waterloo, where Nap-
oleon met with his defeat. 1 was
also in the City of Namur, at Dinant,
Ghent, Bruges and Malines. At the
latter municipality I saw the grave
of the late Cardinal Mercier.
'I found it handy to travel through
Belgium by sightseeing busses. Ev-
erything of interest is pointed out
to you, and its meaning is explained.
I found women a nusiance on these
trips. The moment the bus stopped,
they flecked to the stores, .,and you
could not get them back to the bus
until they had examined all the mer.
chandise saleable. Much valuable
time was lost thus.
