My Trip to Europe
(By Rev. Father le Marchand)
(Continued from last week)
It was fortunate that I was in York
at this time; for the Princess Eliza-•
beth and Duke of Edinburgh' were
making a private tour through the
City. Stationing myself early in front
of the Catherdal, I witnessed•the re-
ception of the princess by the Arch-
bishop and the Mayor of the OitY,
dressed in their festive regalia. This
was my first sight of royalty. It was
thrilling. And I was not disappointed
in the appearance of the princess;for
I saw in her everything that I had
expected it+0 See in a princess. Stich
refinement and dignity!
Now, niy dear people, it will be
impossible to describe to you every-
thing that I saw. In fact, 1 saw so
many interesting things, that I actu-
ally stopped taking notes. I will have
Ito rely on my memory. I learned that
the cheapest and best way to visit

den party at his Castle. The castle
with its spacious halls was proroably
built nine hundred years ago during
the Norman times. Here I rubbed
shoulders with the nobility of the
land. Let me name :a few of them.
The Duke and Duchess of Norfolk,
the Marquis of Reading, Prime ,Min-
ister Attlee, Viscount Simon, the
Belgian Ambassador, Lord Many;
Lord Yerell, Sir Cecil Hunt and many
others.
saw many old castles, aating sev-
eral hundreds of years back. But
Canterbury Cathedral is the most
beautiful and awe-inspiring edifice
of them all. There, on the spot
where I stood, Thomas Becket was
murdered. Whilst visiting Canter-
bury, stayed at a house which had
been built in the year 1300. Every-
thing in this .City is old and has his-
tory attached to it.
Finalry; I arrived at London, the
largest City in the world. I was
bewildered at first. But one must
never falter, 'expecially when alone.
I have been here or one whole week.
At first I expected to spend only 3
days here. But there are so many
things of real import to (partic-
ularly if you:know your Briti h His-
tory and your Holy Religicn), that
it is impossible to get away. This
is the centre of the British Empire.
Here all the important events of the
Kingdom took place. There is West -
Minster Abbey, over a thousand
years old, where all the kingl of
England were crowned. There is St,
rani's, where lie the bodies of Nel-
son and. Wellington. Here is eas
Tower of London, wherein are kept
the crown jewels. Buckingham Pal-

England is a tourist's paradise. In
Ontario we do not know where to go
to see a place of interest, whereas
here one finds so many places of real
historical importance and interest.
The weather has been ideal. There
has been continual sunshine, but no
extreiii heat. I have seen no signs
of a depression. There is plenty of
food at cheaper prices than in Wind-
sor. London has been bombed. Sixty
thousand people were killed. But the
English are recovering very nicely
from their war wounds. The country
roads are full of bicycles and hikers.
However there are no signs of young
people. The young men are apparent-
ly drafted to serve for 16 morals in
the army. The English people are
very hospitable, and ready to go' out
of their way to assist one. Everyone
seems to thank you for rendering
you a service. You never hear an
automobile horn as in Canada.. No
one seems to be in any special hurry.
met a few Englishmen who had
travelled in Canada. They told me
they had been impressed by the Can-
adian hospitality and kindness. So,
there you are!
I still have more of England to
gee which will do after my return
from Ireland and Scotland. I a.m
leaving. for Ireland on Wednesday.
I am becoming a seasoned traveller.
One naturally gets wise to many
things with time. Fortunately my
health has come back to me because
my former fears have now disappear-
ed. The bewilderment which broke
me down at firet, is not so great now.
A companion would be of no special
help, since I ineist anon havieg my
own way, so as not to iris anything
t No two neeple think alike.
Well, must close now. 1 have ro
worries about LaSalle, knew that
I everything is going on well over
there.--Sincereiy Yours.
