London, England August 15, 1949 Dear Father Paul and Parishoners: Before getting off the boat at Liverp:iol, we were thoroughly examieed lay a flock of officers, \ vh o concerned themselves with o •7- ;):1 ports and the amount of no - carried. Then for the first tie my life, I put my feet upon English soil. For a while I was non-p:ussed. What was I to do? My plans had been upset; for we did not land at Lon- don as scheduled, owing to the dock strikes. In order to consider what I was to do, I boarded a double -deck bus, and rode about the city. It appeared to be a commercial city and a great sea -port. Revising the plans that I had drawn up at home, I decided to visit York ana tnen to proceed southwards. Leaving the bus wa3 directed to the railroad statin by a pedestrain. The trains Seemed funny to me. They were so little, and' the windows were so wide. But these trains were very comfortable and quite speedy. Viewing the coun- try from the train, I thought that T had never before seen such beautiful scenery. I find it impossible to des- cribe this part of England,—the en- chantment of its villages, towns and countryside. Arriving at York I was fortunate in securing accomodations at a. place overlooking the cathedral Yorkrnin- ster. A' long time ago, before the days of King Henry the Eigth, this beautiful edifice had been a Catholic cathedral. The ail? of York was very charming. It is said that it has not changed a great deal for the last seven hundred years. Each corner •of the city has a new surprise for me. The next day I visited Fon- taine Abbey, a most beautiful and imposing monastery. It has • been pillaged and destroyed by Henry VIII. That evening I visited the An- glican Dean of York. I found him an interesting .conversationanst. Next visiting the country churches. found thein all gems of architectural perfection. Beforem the reformation they had all been Catholic, Finally, taking courage, I decided to visit the private palace of tbe Anglican Arch- bishoip. This palace is a historical I one, having been inhabited by all 1 the archbishops of York, both Cath- olic and Protestant since the twelfth 4110.1112WAIMERMAlt_ .1359MOMISMIZIALIMCGE*57;55CFEt .511727MMEMEMED213N For Highest ality ee Ir eta ONLY RE -CLEANED GRAIN USED IN OUR FEEDS.
