WINNER OF CAR
Seaforth Lions Club's 14th annual
summer carnival came to a close on
Friday night with the three -night un-
dertaking proving highly successful.
Proceeds will be used for Lions wel-
fare and maintenance of the Lions
Park and Pool. Special: prrzes were
drawn each night with the winners
being: Clarence Welsh, Ingersoll, a
1949 car; W. Herman, Toronto, a
trip to New York; new electric refr-
igerator, Lorne Wessman, Seaforth;_
bicycle Wm. Ducklow, Moncton; blan
kets E. Smith Wainsley. Etc. A spe-
cial attraction was an amateur con-
test, and the first prize :of $'75 went
to 5 -yr. -old Joan Johnston of Blyth;
2nd, Patsy Brugger, Seaforth, 3rd
to Yvonne Frolic and Robt. Ballah,
Mildmay.
HAY COUNCIL
The Council of the Township of
Hay met in the Township Hall, Zur-
ich, on Monday evening, July 4th at
8.30 p.m. at which time the follow-
ing business was carried out.
That the minutes of the previous
and special meeting be adopted as
read.
That the money borrowing by-law
No. 5, for the Hay Municipal Tele-
phone System and By-law No. 4 set-
ting the rates for telephone service
be read first and second time and for-
warded to the Ontario Municipal
Board for approval.
That the .bodget for the year 1949
as presented 'by the Clerk-Treas., be
adopted and that the rates be as
follows: County rate 9.9 Mills; for
the General Public school rate 3.6
mills; for Exeter High School main-
tenance rate 2.1 mills; for Exeter
High School building 3.7 mills; for
the general township rate 2 mills; for
Hay Twp Road rate 6 mills; Hay
Twp. School Area rate 7 muds; Zur-
ich Police Village 15 mil's; be con-
firmed by by-law. Clerk to proceed
to complete the 1949 Collector's
Roll.
That Monday, August 1st and Dec-
ember t26th 1949 be declared a Civ-
ic Holiday by virtue of a resolution
passed by the Council of the Town-
ship of Hay.
That the Engineer's Report en the
Makins Drain as received from the
Township of .Stephen be read and
accepted as received and that the
Clerk be authorized to have sufficient
copies of the By-law drawn up and
sent to the assessed land -owners con-
cerned. Date of Court of Revision to
be Auguse 15th at 8 p.m. at the
Township Hall, Zurich.

Left on Motor Trip
Mn Herb Kraft of Detroit, accom-
panied: by Mr and Mrs 11. F. Stade
of town, left for an extended motor
trip and. will be away for some time
enjoying the beautiful drives of our
fair and extensive country.
Is Attending Camp
Mr and Mrs. Gordon Howald, Mr.
Henry - Howald visited at Kitchener
on Sunday. Misses Shelia Schilbe,
Mary Jane Howald are attending the
Lutheran 'Girls' Camp at Edgewood
Park,, near Guelph for two weeks. A
fine vacation for our youth.
Had Successful Year
Mr. Bruce Eickmeier of town who
is enrolled in the Faculty of Dent-
istry at the University of Toronto,
has been successful in passing all
his examinations with a class stand-
ing off: 15 in a class of 714. We
congratulate Bruce on his fine year's
work, and wish him continued suc-
cess.
Dies at Dunville
Word has been received of the
passing of a former well known resi-
dent of Zurich and district in the
person of Mrs. Helena Campbell, who
after selling her residence in Zurich
to Mr. R. F. Stade, moved with her
daughter, Mrs. J. J. Barry to Dun-
ville She passed away on Tuesday,
July 19th, The body is resting at
Dunville until Thursday at 8 o'clock
where. High Mass will be sung. Bur-
ial will follow in St. Boniface R.C.

HAD BAD ACCIDENT
Four Hensall men, Councillors and
firemen, met with a terrible accid-
ent ner Brantford on Monday fore-
nooin en they were on their way to
Toronto to negotate the purchase of
a new Are engine. Their car, a new
nischgone les-, than 300 miles
got' in' collision • with a transport
truck and as a result. Mr. Mel Moir,
prominent garageman was instantly
killed, the other three are badly in-
jured and are, Ed Fink, fire chief,
C. Passmore and Jack Tudor. Just
how badly these are injured we are
not in a position to say, but it istho-
ught Passmore will lose a leg, and
Fink is suffering aabroken• ankle.
• Away To New York
This week the big International
Convention of Lionism is being held
in New York City, where Liotti from
all parts of the 'world gather for
this annual event, and it is a big
affair with many thousands of dele-
gates gathering for this instructive
and educational affair. The new pres-
ident for the corning year will be a
, Canadian, Mr. Fisher from the Nia-
gara District, and it will be many
years before it will again fall to a
Canadian for a president. _Local
Lions who are attending are Secret-
ary Bill Siebert; President George
Deichert and past President Theo.
Haberer. The latter two went by
auto taking their wives with them,
and we are assured they are having
a lovely time and will come back
knowing all the more about Lionism.

ROE'S VITIMIZED FEEDS
LATE HERBERT KRUEGER
There passed away at the General
Hospital, Toronto, on Monday, July
18th. Herbert Krueger, a prominent
business man of Zurich, in his 56th
year. Mr. Krueger, who was a barb-
er by trade seemed to be in usual
health and doing his work, until a
few weeks ago when he took ill and
was taken to London Hospital, and
then home .for a few days, and then
he left for Toronto General Hospital
and regardless of medical skill seem-
ingly nothing could be •done for him
and he slept peacefully away on Mon-
day. The community is mourned at
his so early in life departure, just
in middle life, and he of course will
be missed most by his .immediate
family. Surviving is hia wife the
former Roselli Elizabeth Schilbe,
one daugther, Jean, R.N. of London,
and a sou, Campbell, who is attend-
ing Exeter High School; his moths,•,
mro. Henry Krueger, Dashwood, and
two sisters Mrs. Pieluach and Mrs.
