Fcr a considerable time the name
of Trieste had almost disappeared
from lite big headlines But now,
since Russia's action of bringing that
issue before the United Nations
Security Council at Lake Success,
Trieste is likely once more to be-
come front-page news.
Observers of world affairs believe
that Russia's move marks one of the
',opening steps i13 a pres&are campaign
the Soviets intend to wage against
the "rebel" Marshal Tito. And, on
the whole. the United Nations coun-
cil is encouraged. rather than other -
i ise. by this evidence that Russia
•,•arts to pull Tito back "into line."
Fon if it does nothing else, it
Nvonld seem to indicate that Russia
has no real intention of withdrawing
from the United Nations as a re-
sult of the Atlantic Pact. What the
Kremlin strategists appear to be up
to is trying to divorce Tito from the
people by means of propaganda.
They can—or will try to—tell the
"trogcslays that Tito is "selling cut"
to the western powers, even to the
a,xtirt of abandoning their country's
historic claire to ownership of
Trieste,
Ba1'otiitg for municipal officials
for 'Trieste is scheduled for June,
rand the vote will probably take cn
the character of a plebiscite to deter -
:mine whether the area should be re-
turned to Italy or become indepen-
dent, ale western powers first
d?Marltled that Trieste be made a
free territory; but nowv have shifted
dr position and favor the return
of the region to Italy-.
Anyway, Communist strength in
;.the city of Trieste seems to have
Teeen pretty badly weakened by the
split between the Titoists and ante-
Titoists, which should be encotirag-
fog, even though the means . by
- which the split was achieved might
be cptn to questioning from s

JAPAN
','hese'= a steadily rising tide of
Communist power in Japan, and
the Japanese Government is begin-
ning to realize that it lacks the
;strength to stem that tide, or even to
investigate openly where it has its
eonrc:.
I"0r, because of international con-
miderations, the American occupation
Administration in Japan is reluctant
to sponsor, or even permit an open
anti-Communist campaign. The Jap-
anese Government has also discover.
ed that, without its former police
isuppression machinery, an anti-Com-
munist campaign might backfire on
file o-ernment itself.
Formerly, the Government might
'rave called on the services of police
Agents to furnish the information
necessary to investigation, Today,
however, although the Japanese po-
llee have access to information on
rOalluunist activities they can neer it
tenly •
for actual criminal prosecution.
The Communists, on the other
hand, have a nationwide intelligence
xietwork which is generally consid-
ered to be more efficient than any
either now operating in Japan. They
clave rued it liberally to discredit
government and business personali-
ties. :\nd they have been particular -
3y suecessfnl in spotting important
eases of tax evasion, largely because
of the ntnnhcr e,f lied agents planted
dl tali •''*'l t'ting agencies thrcnighout
the ' *u1ltry.
The whole situation is contplicat-
leei, of eunrtc. by he fact that the
Suprt;ple seennitatider, Allied Pow -
sets, theoretically represents Russia
AA ewe 11 as all oilier allied powers in
japan. It's .i mixed up situation and

'Auric ie 1rt worst before it improves.
'What ws call "class' in either an
athlete or a horse. is a peculiar
1. thing. almost impossible to define.
It is the "something" which spurs a
fighter on to beat another who, on
form, should be the winner—which
gives a Thoroughbred what it takes
to finish in front of a rival that, on
comparative times, should show the
way to the wire.
* *
These „profound" thoughts conte
to us on loking over the chart of a
race which the steed entitled
COALTOWN ran down at Gulf-
stream Park not long ago—a truly
amazing performance if ever there i
was one. He equalled the world's
record for a mile and a quarter set
back in 1939 by an English horse,
SAINT ANDREWS IT, and tied
last winter by the Australian speed -
ball SHANNON 11,
* * *
More than that, the Brighton
racetrack where SAINT AN-
DREWS ran is said to he slightly
downhill: and Golden Gate at Al-
bany, California is known as a
lightning fast MA—so fast that
there are some who suspect that
the surveyor W110 laid it out Used
a tape somewhat shrunken by rain,
or something of tl'e sort.
', * ii
To make COAT,'ro\WN`S rec-
ord still more remarkable, he stum-
bled at the star: and collided slight-
ly with anothr starter—enough to
lose a race for most horses, and
had a strange jockey- in the saddle.
Yet in spite of all this ire went to
the front quickly, and in no time at
all was far in the lead, \Ve won't
bother to give you the fractional
times, but he finished out the mile
and a quarter in 1:59 and 4/5ths—
which, on a race track, is next thing
to flying. Yet for the last half
)rule Ovie Scurioc';, his rider, had I
him under snug restraint•
* *
Judged strictly ttsy- the split-sec-
ond watch, then (70AL'.TOWN is
undoubtedly the speediest horse on
this continent --- possibly in the
world, Yet there are some—includ-
ing, we believe, the men who train
both of them—that if COAL -
TOWN ever booked up with his
stabiemate CITATION, the latter
would be the winner. Getting back
to our opening text, they believe
that COALTOWN has just a little
lnre "class"—and maybe they are
right,
* * *
However, that's one issue that's
not likely ever to be decided, as it's
doubtful that the minter of the two
would ever consent to such a race
although it would draw like a
niu-lard plaatrr. After watching
the fiasco when MAN O'WAR
practically ran away and hid from
a S I R BARTON — that never
'r[nild have been allowed to start
--ww'e vett rd to keep strictly away
from Match Races for the balance
of our days. Still, if they should
ever match C(?AT.TO\WN with
CITATION, we imagine we'd at
least be tempted,
