tinuously the bank's work has been
woven into the vast progress of the
country since colonial days.
Pioneer Days
A good account of early timeshas
come down from James Croil, a Brit-
ish settler who later became a Bank
of Montreal shareholder for the ex-
traordinary span of 60 years.

"we had neither mowing nor reaping
nor threshing machines, and the wo-
men had no sewing machines...The
postage on a letter from Ontario to
Halifax was two shillings threepence
There was n.o money in circulation
in those days..( verything was
done by halter. Mr. Croil wrote
those words referring to Canadian
conditions at a time a geed deal lat-
er in the l9th century than 1817. It
can be imagined how diff'ic'ult life
was in that even more primitive day.
When the Montreal Bane, ris it
was then known, first opened its
doors, the population of Canada was
just about half -a million. 'trade was ceremony a wedding dinner was ser -
