By FRANK MANN HARRIS
("A Sixbit Critic")
One of these days, if we ever get
round to it, we are going to write a
thrilling murder story. Right now
we •can only give you the plot in a
nutshell—which might be the 'most
appropriate container, at that. Any-
way, it starts off with this husband
and wife going to Thorncliffe Race
Track together. He is a deep sftt-
.dent, who sits tip all night working
his handicapping figures out to 13
places of decimals; while she knows
so little of horses that she thinks a
quarter-crack is a guy who calls
football signals.
* * *
The husband announces that his
figures show that BIG DICK dan-
not possibly lose. ' The wife con-
fesses that she fancies a :thing call-
ed CRUMBY because it has eyes
like Fred,. MaeMurray's and _ the
cutest -looking jockey. Rightly dis-
regarding such nonsense, the hus-
band' bets the entire bundle on BIG
DICK, who stops to take a few
bows coming down the stretch and
finishes ninth. The wife then pro-
duces a $2 ticket on CRUMBY, who
has won , paying $59.20. Laughing
merrily 'she waves it in his face,
saying "Didn't I tell you so, dear?" ;
whereupon the husband borrows a
betsy from a passing mining brok-
er 'and shoots her. plumb through the
heart.
* * n
II'e fancy younow saying to yonr-
sclf that there's nothing novel about
this—that it's the sort of thing that
could happcce to anybody. But slick
around till you hear the big court-
room 'scene. 7 he dcrenee attorney,
7l'ho has been careful to include
only horse -players on the jury, states
the simple facts of the rase; and the
jurymen, without leaving their seats,
give a verdict of "Justifiable Homi-
cide." The talc ends with the 'Judge,
himself a place -parlay addict, ex-
pressing 'regret that he cannot give
the husband a medal; mnd,We thinly
the title will be SHE HAD IT
COMING:
* * 'F
Whoever it was that coined the
old saying "No News Is Good
News" surely cannot have been an
investor in Irish Sweepstake tickets ;
and once. again we find ourself tak-
ing -what satisfaction we can out of
having trade another contribution
to these Irish hospitals which,- by
this time, must be furnished with
gold beds and platinum bedpans.
However, mindful of the warning'
regarding phony tickets published in
this space smile weeks ago, we tool:
extra precautions to make certain of
the genuineness of the one' we
bought on the Derby. When the
seller assured us he gets them di-
rect froth a mall who lives right in
Glocca Aforra, we- knew it must be .
O.K.

In these t'raublous times it is grat-
i'fy'ing to sole how everybody, with-
out exception, is agreed on one
thing—that the outer fellow's prices
are mnuch too high. The esteemed
Globe & Mail solemnly warns Labor
that it is threatening prosperity, by
demanding too pouch; and Labor
comes' back by asking the G. & M.
7t'llen it is going to wipe out the 66%
increase in its ozc'n selling• price,-
made
rice,made some time aga.

The noble sport of wrestling is
being still further elevated by the
inclusion of man -grapples -alligator
contests on the same bill with reg-
ulation' bouts. Outside of wondering
where our Governmental authori-
ties -who license such things
iv ul " be prepared to draw the line,
we have no personal comment to
make• on this innovation; but we
rather enjoyed that of an old frictid
who remarked, "It must be pretty
hard on the alligator's self-respect;
but if the reptile can stand it I
don't suppose any -of the rest of the
supporting cast have a kick com-
ing."

IIUMAN PROGRESS NOTES:
After untold centuries the March of
Civilization has inose' advanced to a
point where, if Mahatma Gandhi and
Gipsy Rose Lee were billed to enter
from opposite sides of the sande
stage, 90% of all eyes would be on
the stripper, 10% on the great spir-
itual leader. You deny tihat those
figures are correct? All right—make
it ninety -right and t7t'o.
Business Forecast;
No Cause for Mann
No pessimists are Winthrop W.
Aldrich, chairman of the board of
the Chase National Bank, and
Thomas J, Watson, president of the
International Business Machines Co.
They see no .cause for "boom and
bust" alarms and predict that ''the
'United States will not suffer a major
depression as the aftermath of war,
Mr. Aldrich and Mr. Watson could
be wrong, but they didn't get where
they are in the world of business
by making a habit of it.
Their forecasts are on the record
and for reasons they must regard
as sound. Time, it certainly is to be
hoped, will bear them out,
