the home of his son, William in Cre-
diton, from where a private funeral
service was held on Monday. Inter-

'Mrs. Chris. Hoist, who has been a
faithful member of the Dorcas Band
class in the Evangelical Sunday
School, was on Sunday last, during
the class period, presented with a
gift prior to her moving to Zurich,
where she will reside. The address

seems about the only way at present
to get new homes in short order, as
building supplies are scarce and very
hard to get.
Lions Club News
At the regular meeting of the Zur-
ich Lions Club on Monday evening
in the Dominion House considerable
business was transacted, such as the
coining season's sports program, it is
hoped to have a hard ball team this

Hensall Council Minutes
Regular meeting of the Village Co-
uncil was held on the eve. of May 7
at 8 p.m. in the Council Chamber
with all members present. Minutes
of the previous meeting were read
and adapted. The Clerk reported
the conversation he recently had with
Mr. D. Wilson the Clerk of :Seaforth
re sidewalks, also with Sir. Corbett,
Reeve of Lucan re waterworks and
the suggestion made by funs as re-
gards the'same.
Motion, that the Clerk wrote the
Dept. of Health in Toronto request-
ing them to make tests of the water
in all the wells in the Village.
Miss C. Mitchell appeared re the
drains in her locality.
A delegation from the Chamber of
Commerce composed of W. R. Dav-
idson, F. Smallacombe, W. Frown,
and R. Middleton, re the improvem-
ents contemplated in the Park, and
the donation of land proposed by Mr
T. Welsh to the Park and stated the
condition of the same, which were
greatly appreciated by the Council
and will certainly be accepted and
fulfilled.
That. we hold a Court or Revis-
ion on the Assessment Roll for 1946
on June 4th at 8 p.m.
That we gather the garbage as us-
ual on. May 15-16 as requested by
the Board of Health, and that the
Clerk advertise the same as usual.
A number of correspondeces were
read and filed.
The Clerk also reported the inter-
view he had with the Rental Control
Board re the renting of the '.flown
Hall.
That we prepare a by-law setting
the rates of renting the Town Hall
as follows: for the auditorium $12;
Council Chamber $4; reading room
82; and the local churches and school
the use of the auditorium for $6.

Late J. W. Ortwein
J. W. Ortwein, one of Hensall's
most prominent figures, and a wide-
ly known citizen, passed away on
Monday at his residence in Hensall
in his 97th year. Resident of the
village for more than 40 years, he
was born at Heidelberg where he was
postmaster and general merchant.
He had also been a merchant in Lis-
towel, Zurich, Hensall and Seaforth
and was agent for the Dominion Life
Insurance Co. for many years; past
president of the Western Ont. Bible
Society; Superintendent of the Sun-
d'ay''School for 25 years. In municip-
al. life he served as reeve ane coun-
cillor and was a member of Hensall
United church. Five years ago Mr.
and Mrs. Ortwein celebrated their
golden wedding. Surviving are his
widow, the former Elizabeth Wagner
two sons, Alonzo, Detroit; Milton of
London; four daughters, Mrs. J.
Brenkholt, Kitchener; Mrs. R. Lohr,
Altoona, Pa.; Mrs. James A. Pater-
son and Mrs. M. G. Drysdale, both of
Hensall. The funeral service is being
held. at the Hensall United Church on
Wednesday at 3 p.m., with Rev. R.
A. Brook in charge. Burial wil follow
in Hensall Union Cemetery.

Mrs. John Elder
Mrs. Mary Ann Smillie Elder, eld-
est daughter of the late Benjamin
and Jane Buchanan Smillie, and wife
of John. Elder, Hensall, flied at her
home Friday Mrs. Elder was always
a very active woman of the commun-
ity and an church work and will be
greatly. missed, also as a Sunday
school teacher. Surviving are three
sons and four daughters: Wm. Ben-
jamin of London, John G., Oshawa,
and Lorne C. of Hamilton, Mrs. Bert
Peck of Stanley; Mrs. A. E. Howe,
Halifax; Mrs H. L. Statham, Icings--
ville, and Mrs. Delbert Geiger, Zur-
ich. She was a sister of James Smil-
lie of Hensall ; Dr. A. B. Smillie of
Nigara Falls, Rev. 13. S. Smillie,R•as-
alpura, India and the Misses Marg-
aret and Emmeline of Toronto. The
funeral service was hold on Monday
from the Hensall United Church and
was largely attended, and conducted
by Rev. R. A. :Brook. Mr. W. 0
Goodwin sang Burial was in Hensall
Union cemetery. The bearers were
five grandsons, Harold and Kenneth
Eider, Hensall ; Robert K., John M.
and Harold Peck of Zurich; a neph-
ew Clarence Smillie, Hensall; flower
bearers were Alfred Taylor, It J.
Paterson, W. R. Dougall, Robert and
Douglas Cook, Walter Fairbairn, T.
Welsh, J. Tapp, Hensall, F. Elliott,
Toronto, Roland Geiger, Zurich. The
casket was banked with lovely floral
