At Bayfield Again
The Directors of the Bayfield Ag-
ricultural Society met in the Town
Hall, with the president, Carl E Diehl
in the chair. It was decided to have
the commercial apple growers' comp-
etition ogain this year. Field crop and
calf coy-ipetitions were discussed and
it wa decided to investigate the pos-
sibility of a commercial grain grow-
ing competition.
Mr. Frad Bancroft of St.
called in town on Friday.
Streets Graded
On Monday the big Township gra-
der made its annual rounds on our
Village streets, and shaped up the
roads, which was badly needed. But
there is the usual question mark,
'Who cleans the mud and gravel off
the sidewalk crossings" It is usually
left to the party living closest to it
no -matter how many people of that
part of town benefit by the removal
of this unwelcome visitor on the cros-
sings, noibod,y offers to give a hand to
the party doing the work, the one
who lives closest. We remember a
time not so long ago, when a few
men followed the grader with shov-
els and :cleaned off the crossings, but
seemingly now that would be consid-
ered a luxury or waste of time.
Minstrel Show
Next Friday evening, April 20th,
will be the first real showing 1:y. the
new Minstrel Show put on by the
Zurich Lions Club, assisted by some
young people of the community. The
director of the affair is Mrs. Harry
G. Hess, who has so capably directed
the two previous shows put on by
thisorganization. There are a lot of
all new jokes, of which one must be
wide awake to catch them all, hut
laughter galore will again be in store
for one and all who attend. Lots
of good siin.ging, as these Liona are
noted for that .-'~e right out of the
very southland, that colored people
love s- much. You will do well to get

'General opinion is that the Frost
Government at Toronto is doing a
good job. Amongst many things the
grants to all municipalities made by
the present Govt. have been far in
excess of anything in the past.
Needless to say, without this as-
sistance our local taxes would now
be, much higher.
The following facts concerning
Highways and Hydro in relation to
Hay Township will be of special in-
terest to you.
The actual grant paid hy the De-
partment of Highways to Hay Twp.
m ,11949_50 was $12,821.12+6.
In the matter of building rural
Hydro, lines, here is the record. In
1948 number of miles of line built
7.00, new custcmers added 78; 1949
10.90 miles and 76 new customers,
in 1950 4.25 miles, 57 new customers
It is not generally realized that
only half of the cost of building rur-
al hydro lines is paid by the con-
sumer. The other half is paid by the
Provincial Government as outright
'assistance.
