Spring Comes Slowly
The weatherman is rather unsett-
led this past week, with snow and
rain and more snow, which is lying
on the roofs to -day, Wednesday. On
Monday ive had the nicest weather
for some time, but after this we hope
it will be better. In some districts
in Canada they are again experienc-
ing floods, which are driving people
out of their homes, so we must look
on the bright side and say "It might
be a whole lot 'arse." We are sorry
for the robins and early) birds which
are so plentiful so early.

First President Attends
At the Co -Op. Banquet and Annu-
al Meeting last Wednesday evening,
a well worthy tribute was extended
to Mr. Albert Hendrick, now living
with his daughter, Mr and Mrs. Harry
Cole, Exeter, for being the first pres-
ident of the 'organization and being
present at this meeting. Mr. Hen-
drick, as we all know, was one of
the prominent fanners on the Blue.
Water Highway, and did much dur-
ing his years there in developing the
Co -Operative movement, sacrificing
much of his time to • develop this
enterprize, and his many friends
were pleased to have him at the
meeting. He is indeed a cheerful and
pleasant man to meet, and regardless
of his physical handicap, is very
cheerful. He recently celebrated
his 83rd birthday at the home of his
son, Mr. and Mrs. Edmond Hendrick
near Crediton, where a very suitable
time was arranged. Also attending
the golden wedding celebration of
IVIr. and Mrs. Henry Heist at the
Hendrick home near Crediton.
RATED T -B POSITIVE
Huron County Health Unit with
Chairman Frank Sills, Seaforth, pre-
siding, held it, regular meeting at
the Health Centre, Clinton, with fav-
orable reports received. Dr. R. M.
Aldis, MOH, and director, stated that
of the 59t2i students in the County
high schools, tested for T.B., 45 were
positive or approximately eight per
cent. Dr. Aldis said that this was av-
erage 'for this part of Ontario, but
hopes that with repeated testings
each year this rate might be further
reduced.

FLAMES. DESTROY. BUILDINGS
AT COUNTY HOME
Fire raced through a driving shed
filled with faun implements belong-
ing to the Huron County Horne, at
Clinton, Wednesday night of last
week. Loss totalling many thousands
of dollars end included a car, two
tractors, a binder and all the imple-
ments used on the county farm. Also
razed was a hennery, a frame struct-
ure approximately 25x18 feet. Fire-
men fought successfully to save the
county barn, housing . the famous
Holstein herd, valued at $17,000, as
well as pigs valued at several thous-
and dollars. Firemen from Clinton,
the R.C.A.F. Radar Station( and the
Bayfield 'brigade, responded. Ward-
en Arthur Nicholson gave great praise
to the firemen saying they did a won-
derful. job to save the big barn,
which is only 24 feet from the dri-
ving shed. It is believed the cause
of the •fire was defective wiring. It
was discovered by a resident of. Clin-
ton who gave the alarm to the home
manager.

Federation of
Agriculture
The annual meeting of the Ontario
Beef Cattle producers will be held
in the Royal York Hotel in Toronto
on April 10th, starting at 10 ann.
In a news letter from the Canad-
ian Federation of Agriculture we
find some interesting information on
subaidies.Phe letter points put that
tariff` protection for Canadian Indus-
try has cost the people of Canada
something close to three billion dol-
lars in the past twenty years. Can-
ada's gold industry employs only 23,-
000 people, yet in 1940 that Indus-
tr•Igl was saibsidierd .to the extent of
over three million dollars. During
that same per 38 of the. ar est
daughter,
f r p l g
1 gold mines made a net profit of le
million dollars. This subsidy was IA
force for a three year period and is
likely to be renewed.
The subsidy on coal movement in
194.9 •amounted to nearly four pit.,
lion dollars and on steel and rront
shipments over 4? million dollar°
In Great Ilritain heavy subsidies are
paid to agriculture. A grant is made
to cover 40'p.c. of the cost of instal-
ling a water system in farm build..
Illr. and d cr farm Il nl 1
h Izme. 50 a c. of the
1
cost of providing a dwelling for a,
farm owner, is made by the British
Government. If such a system were
in effect in Canada we tyould finds
more farms occupied and better live
ing accoinodation on the farms that,
are already occupied.
