NO DANGER FROM MODERN
CANS
Did you know that "tin can" isn't
made of tin? It is actually sheet met-
al steel with only a fine coating of
tin plated on both sides.
And did you know that food left in
an open tin can today( is just as safe
as it would. be in a. glass jar or any
other containere In the early days of
canning, housewives were 'Warned to
empty the food from the can as soon
as it was opened (because of the dan-
ger of contamination. Many people
are still faithfully following these
instructions, in spite of the fact that
modern cans are perfectly safe as
food containers!
Years ago paint chemists developed
corrision-resistant enamels for .coating
over tin. Now you can open up a
caw, of salmon or any other food and
leave the left -over portion right in the
can. So says the C -I -L News For
Women. But it's hard to break a
habit and Grandma never will be
convinced!
Commercial food canning in Can
ada has grown into a multimillion
dollar industry since 1839 wnen the
first cannery was opened in the Pay
of Fu dp, Nova Scotia, for the sal -
111011 canning. The yearly value of
Canned fruits, vegetables, meats and
other foody is about 250 motions:
The industiiya employes thousands of
workers and directly supports more
thousands of farmers and fishermen.
The tin can is big business!
