GIRL CONQUORS CHANNEL
Seventeen -year-old Marilyn Bell
sprinted the last 200 yards ashore on
Sunday afternoon at Dover, England,
and became the ,youngest swimmer to
conquer the treacherous waters of
the English Channel. The Toronto
swimmer touched the English coast
about 3.30 our time after being in the
water 14 hours and. 36 minutes. The
five7foot-two schoolgirl swam strongly
throughout against swift currents and
strong tides, which prevented her
from setting a woman's record for
the 21:-rnile swim. A strong westerly
current held her up for at least two
hours when she was two miles from
shore, but she kept • .going right on.
Miss Bell will receive n tremendous
ovation when she gets back home in
Toronto shortly.
