FATAL DROWNING AT
GRAND BEND
On Friday August "20th at Grand
Bend struggling helplessly in choppy
waters near that lakeshore resort, a
Strathroy mother saw her two chil-
dren, sons, drown .before ,s.he herself
slipped under water, and although
helped to the beach by her husband,
she died before artificial respiration
could be applied. Lifebelts in the
boat which overturned offshore, were
not being worn. The dead are, Mrs.
Arlie Smithrim, • 28, and her sons,
Ronald 4, arid John 6. Aso in the boat
which capsized off Southcott Pines
Beach, one mile south of G. B. were
Evan .Smithrirn, 33, her husband, a
PUC lineman, Janet aged 12, and Al-
len Denning 14, all of Strathroy.
They managed to struggle ashore in
an exhausted condition. The baby
was later taken to Exeter Hospital.
The Smithrims were on holidays at
the Bend staying at a cottage, and
the family was out on the choppy
lake in an open boat powered with a
25 -hp. engine. About 200 yards off
shore while the vessel was riding
deep in a trough, a wave turned it
over.
