Best Baked Beans
Massive iron pots, hanging from
large wooden tripods, dominate the
approaches to Hensall on the High-
ways leading into town. The :pots are
designed to remind the public that
Hensall Kinsmen are • holding the
Ontario Bean Festival on Labor Day,
and that a feature of the day will be
baked beans. To ensure that the
beans are baked in accordance with
;only the best recipes, the Kinsmen
have asked for the assistance of dis-
trict housewives in forwarding to the
club the best baked bean recipe they
have. It will be a unique event and
will create much enthusiasm.

The Voice of Temperance
The Canadian Temperance Act is do-
ing a far better job than its enemies
Would have us believe. We need to
keep in mind some facts about tt that
are too easily overlooked. This law,
-Characterized as "ancient" by some
critics, and as a "horse and buggy
days" statute by others, was passed
by the Dominion Government in '1876
for the purpose of assisting the Pro-
vincial Government to contror the
liquor traffic. it was effective in re-
ducing the evils of the liquor traffic,
but due to the difficulties encountered
in the matter of enforcement - the
Courts on appeal having decided that
it was the duty of the Provincial Gov-
ernment to enforce this a Domtnton
law, it was repealed in 1888. But a-
gain in 191i41the C.T.A. was put to the
,people and was carried in Huron
County. This law has so irked the
liquor interests that on two occas-
ions appeals have been .made to -the
Courts to have it deleted from our
statute books. Both the Supreme
Court of Canada and The Privy Co-
uncil in England rejected the appeals
and declared the Canada Temperance
E. F. KAct good law. We who have lived
LOPP - ZURICH most of our lives under C.T.A. can -
