Zurich Herald, 1954-02-11, Page 7r;. ii iy TNECalVt f SPORTS COLUMN S met ?e9e4 • Tis is a week which should furnish memories, good and bad, but certainly vivid, for the greatest heavyweight war- rior of modern times, the Manassa Mauler, Jack Dempsey. On February 13„1917, Jack Dempsey suffered the only knockout defeat of his career, when Fireman Jim Flynn, a rough, tough character out of Pueblo, Colorado, flattened him with one devastating punch. But on February 14, 1918, a Dempsey who had found himself and was whirling upward took ample revenge. He dropped his.. erstwhile conqueror, also with a single punch, in a match that was scheduled for 10 rounds, but went only a small fraction of one. "I wasn't much more than a middleweight the first time ' I boxed Fireman Flynn," Dempsey told me years later. "I was 22 years old. (Dempsey was born June. 24, 1895), I didn't know much about boxing, really, I started'. fighting in 1915, won some fights under the name of Kid Blackie, some more under my own name. But I *as just a journeyman fighter, not too much interested in the trade. And when I was knocked out by Flynn, a powerful fellow and a cagey fighter who knew much too much for me, I was just on the verge of quit- ting the ring game entirely. "Then Jack Kearns came along. Under Kearns I learned how to fight, how to box a little; how to use a left hand. Then I began to really fight. I found a style, a bob -and -weave type of fighting that .was something different. I scored a lot of knockouts, lost a decision to Willie Meehan, but I was on my way, taking on bigger and better foes." The fact is that the miraculous Dempsey fought for four years before he finally began to look like somebody of ime portance. In his early days he had soine terrific fights with specimens like the burly Negro John Lester Johnson, Battling Jim Anderson, Andre Anderson, Wild Bert Kenney, Andy Malloy and many other tough foes. Some of his battles lasted 20 rounds. His later battles are still remembered as epics, the mad assault on the giant Jess Willard, the furious melee with Luis .!Angel Firpo, the Wild Bull of the Pampas, and those two fights with Gene Tunney in which Dempsey made more friends in defeat than he ever had in victory. That's the fantastic Dempsey story, one of the great legends of sport in our times, a legend we recall, because this is the anniversary of the week when he was on the verge of giving up the game in which he became an unforgettable figure. By B09 ELLIS Paris, France; Taking off from Dorval, the airport of Montreal, at 10 p.m., we saw the lights on the ground get farther and farther apart, the closer we got to Gander, so sparsely settled is the country hi Newfoundland. At 17,000 feet over the ocean the flight was much quieter than any other way . of travelling could be. Only over the Irish Sea -it got a bit bumpy; what' else would you expect? Before landing at Croydon we were told .to put on our heavy coats as it was cold in England, it had "Only" 57 degrees above . zero. It sure was windy and the continuation of the trip to Paris "rather turbulent." The first thing that strikes the foreign traveller in France is the friendliness and politeness of the people. Their eagerness to help and not to let you down, snakes them give directions at times without being too sure themselves, which took us a couple of times past our destina- tion. Most Beautiful City Paris — in our opinion — still is the most beautiful and most attractive city of the Western world. Les grands boulevards, les grands hotels, les grands cafes are as fascinating as ever. Store window's are full of ex- travagances and the food in every little restaurant is right up to the.reputation of la cuisine frangaise. But prices are high and you cannot get a square mealwith a cup of coffee under two to three dollars. This will, however, include a glass of wine and the tip. Iii the center of this bustling city everybody seems to enjoy life. It is only when you wander through the streets into the out- er districts, that you begin to wonder. Here people live in houses 200 to 300 years old, so ramshackle, dirty and slummy that no Canadian fire marshal or city health inspector would per- mit anybody to stay in them. Here you learn that there are still 5 -million people in France earning less than $80 per month. How little this is, can only be understood if it is realized that MARRY MENAGERIE to , rvyi a x a,n„1,odu. 11.15 a ens!r Xing Non, 3,na,n "It's that Here clear plastid" eggs cost 85 cents a dozen and meat anywhere from 60 cents to a dollar per pound, France Exports Wheat So far, nobody could explain to us why food prices should be so high in France which' has made a great come -back since the last war and- is generally self sufficient in agricultural pro- duction, although last year they had a deficit in their agricultural exports and imports. In good years they do grow enough wheat and produce enough meat to have some surplus for export. Since most European countries have to buy abroad, the French can always sell their surpluses at their own price. However, we heard the very familiar tune that the producer is getting the smallest part of the consumer's franc and that far too much of it is going to dis- tribution. These are only first impres- sions, gathered in a few days and we shall have more to report next week, Au revoirl This column welcomes sug- gestions, wise or foolish, and all criticism, whether constructive or destructive and will try to answer any question. 'lacy Fell Hard --- ut Still Survived All over the world are men and women, waking about and lead- ing normal lives, who would be dead but for a million -to -one chance that landed them square- ly on their feet. Who, in this respect, is the luckiest man? Well. in the nm- ning must be a Bristol painter, who fell 100 feet from Clifton suspension bridge and landed on his feet. The earth was soft and he escaped with two broken ribs, cuts and shock—injuries some folks have suffered falling off a step -ladder. The painter was helping a girl rescue her mackintosh when he fell from the parapet. And the records show only three other people who have fallen from the bridge and escaped alive. Two fell into deep water, The third, a woman many years ago, had her fall :slowed by her crinoline skirt billowing out like a para- chute, Clarence Lund, in Chicago, must have thought when he fell out Of a skyscraper window that he was as good as dead, Hedrop- ped like a stone—more correctly like the three hundred and eight pounds he weighed --,-buta car was parked be- tween him and the pavement, he hit the top of It and bounced On to his feet on the ground. The ear was put out of action, but Heap 0' Hippo — Big Gretl keeps a watchful eye on her adorable (?) baby. The little darling is Mrs. Hippopotamus' third offspring. so it's no wonder officials of the Frankfurt, Germany, zoo consider Gretl one of their prize pdssessions. Lund was only scratched and able to walk to the ambulance that took himofffor a check-up, Search for the record fall vice tim who has survived almost •un hurt produces some astonishing stories. F. S. Sutherland, a Chicago steeplejack, missed his hold 300 feet up. He fell 270 feet, hit tele- phone wiles and was slowed up sufficiently to land in the snow another thirty feet below without fatal, injury. Indeed, a few days later he was walking around as usual. It was sausage meat that saved Andre Cavalier, in 1914, when he fell from a sixth -storey window in Paris. The sausage meat was on a butcher's stall exactly'under- neath. Cavalier spoiled his clothes, but did not break a bone. There were 1,800 feet between Joseph Boulton and solid ground when he overbalanced into a shaft at a Midland colliery. As the daylight faded in the mouth • of 'the shaft, he spotted a wire rope going down it ... and grab- bed it, He slipped 300 feet be - lore he came to a stop 1,000 feet ':down the shaft. His Only injuries wexa burns on his hands and legs etlirOugh friction with the rope, Water at the'bottoni of the shaft saved a niiner who fell in a Staf- fordshire colliery. He , fell .26.0_, feet like a stone. before' hitting the water and escaped • with a cut on the head. Undoubtedly the longest' fall to be survived was that of Mrs: Betty Oliver, who was working an elevator in the Empire State Building when it was hit by a bomber which flew into it. Her elevator was on the 80th floor and she had just closed the gates when the impact of the bomber cut the cables. The elevator plum- meted down 1,000 feet, taking several agonizing seconds to reach the bottom. Fourteen people were 'killed, but Mrs. Oliver survived. Cliff falls are often broken by. •bushes or projections and people have even fallen over Beachy Head and survived. The miracu- lous escape of an 11 -year-old girl, called "E,H.L.," after falling over a 380 foot cliff at Lulworth Cove, is commemorated by an inscrip- tionon the spot. A striking exhibit at the Col- lege of Surgeon's museum for many years has been part of the skeleton of a man showing a hole through chest and back. The man was ramming dynamite in- to a hole when it exploded. The iron bar transfixed him. He sur- vived and died a natural, death many years later. More recently a London fac- tory worker had a million -to -one escape when a metal rod a quar- ter of an inch thick was driven right through his head. It enter- ed below his left ear and came out by his right ear, miraculously missing any vital part. But the most astonishing escape of this kind must have been that of Mr. Swaile, who was in the back seat of a car when it col- lided with a pony cart. With the piece still in his head, he was rushed to hospital, where sur- geons removed it. A couple of months later he was completely recovered. You would expect anyone who fell out of an express train to be killed instantly. Mr. E. Honey - bourne landed on his feet, al- though the train was doing more than 40 m.p.h. The wind of the train billowed into his overcoat and let him down lightly. A two-year-old in Utah was hit by a train travelling at 20 m.p.h.
