Zurich Herald, 1954-01-21, Page 7rf. art SPORTS COLUMN Eemet A;letred o When Montreal's Armand Savoie not so long ago fought Jimmy Carter in the Montreal Forum for the lightweight championship of the world 10,000 sport fans, comfortably seated, saw the battle. That was in marked contrast to the last occasion that a Canadian fought for the sante title. The surroundings for the Savoie -Carter fight were luxurious; the match had legal status. But Harry Gilmore of Toronto had to battle the great Jack McAuliffe for the lightweight crown in 1887 in the furtive secrecy of a Lawrence, Mass,, blacksmith shop, before 64 spectators. Boxing then was outside the pale of the law. Participants and spectators risked arrest and prosecution. Details of the arrangements for the match were guarded so carefully that only three trusted sports writers were admitted. An' enterpris- ing fourth writer gained admission by posing as a carpenter. In a hall directly above the blacksmith shop, a Salvation Army Group was holding a prayer -meeting, its members quite unaware of. what was happening below. As the two sorely bruised scrappers went into the twentieth round, they could hear the voices singing "Hold the Fort." McAuliffe broke away, backed toward the ropes and, half -turning his head, called to his second, non-parell Jack Dempsey: "They ain't having half' as hard a time holding the fort up there, as I am down here!" McAuliffe won by K.O. in the 26th round. Soon after the match, it was learned that the sheriff was in search of the participants. The lightweight champion and his friends were bundled into a sleigh and driven over deserted, snow-covered country roads to a nearby town, Lowell. McAuliffe presented such a battered appearance that a scandalized hotel clerk sternly refused to accommodate the party. How very different from the title bouts of today, that draw thousands of fans, are broadcast and televised all over the continent, with champions richly rewarded! The Sheer bru- tality of boxing in the old days, too, has been lessened by a limit placed on the number of rounds. Your comments and suggestions for this column will be welcomed by Elmer Ferguson, c/o Calvert House, 431 Yonge St., Toronto. CaLvtrt DISTILLERS LIMITED AMHERSTBURG, ONTARIO K.O.s SELF ! Perhaps the most finish to a fistic encounter oc- curred on the night when the colorful Irish thrush, Jack oyle, the singing heavyweight, was busy engaging the British hefty, Eddie Philips. In the second round the hand - unusual some Doyle let fly with a fierce roundhouse right. He missed completely, fell between the ropes and struck his head on the apron of the ring! He was out cold as - he lay flat on his back on the floor at ringside, his feet weirdly resting on the press table as the referee count- ed him out! Hen Lays Atomic Eggs — In the Atomic Energy Commission's radio -biological laboratories a biochemist and a technician give a hen a forced feeding of radioactive calcium -45 and phos- phorus -43 in an experiment on the physiology of egg formation. By measuring the shell, white and yolk of the hen's eggs for radioactivity, scientists try to find out how the her absorbs cal- cium and phosphorus and fills them into various components of the egg. Big Deal — The Pittsburgh Pirates have sent infielder Danny O'Connell (right) to the Milwaukee Braves for six players and an unannounced sum of money. The Braves gave up pitcher Max Surkont (fop left) and outfielder Sam Jethroe (bottom). The Milwaukee club also gave up fielder Sid Gordon and pitchers Fred Waters„Lawrence La Salle and Curtis Raydon. • "FIGHTERS OR BALLET DANCERS” is the title of an ar- ticle in which Mickey Walker takes a few jabs at modern fist - cuffing, with special reference to the TV audience and its effect on the game. And here we might say that Mr. Walker speaks with considerable authority, seeing that he was World Middleweight Champ back in the days when a fighter needed more than a pleasing personality and a photogenic pan in order to get by. tt,, • • "I'm afraid ethe'tfight game is going to be just a memory if the prize ring doesn't develop more talent through punchesinw stead of publicity," says Mickey, who can swing almost as 'hard Some Teem I. "This is Jim Thorpe, here's Frank Shenandoah. Lewis Tewanina will be here a little Irter." Still incredulous, the Lafayette coach took his visitors on a tour of the grounds and finally led them to the stadium for the dual meet. Thorpe startled the home- town spectatc , by winning the dashes, hurdles, d i s c u s, and jumps. Shenandoah took the quarter -mile low hurdles, and Tewanina, who ran most of the way from the station in train- ing for the Olympic Games, ar- rived at the stadium. just in time ,, scamper onto the field and walk off with the two-mile run. That was all the Indians needed to r up the meet. Nowadays, they call it "The Bolo Punch," or some such, and hail it as something new and original Likewise, a fighter was liable to get booed out of the ring if he continually,, backed away from an opponent. Don't get me wrong — I still feel that I'm part of the game, and I still get a kick out of mixing in a fist fight. By saying this I don't mean to stick my chin out — I have enough trouble battling my wife! During my fighting days, she witnessed only one prize fight. But now, with television as her guide, and lacking a ring- side education, she has become an authority on punches. • • * I've heard television viewers judge fighters' abilities in strange ways. One said, "I not only admire Marciano's strong hands, but his serious expres- sion before the gong also has a strong appeal." e • • Another time, after Kid Gavi- lan knocked out Chuck Davey, I listened to an excited man re- mark, "Davey could get knock- ed out every night, but I like to watch him throw his clever me- chanical punches. He gives a lot of action and sure is a great fighter!" * w * It seems that in future evalu- ation of boxers, personal appeal will be more important than ability. Million -dollar sponsors will develop the greatest ring personalities to please armchair fightfans the world over. This is apt to happen sooner than you think, ,k * * I have .a feeling that if Abel Fernandez had continued with boxing gloves instead of sign- ing up for motion pictures, the TV fans would have supported his ring endeavors. He might have even brought back the mil- lion -dollar gates to boxing are- nas, but I'm sure he would have developed enough ring appeal to break all TV records. * * .1 In his fights there was a touch of the old Dempsey showman- ship. But before ringside or TV fans could get familiar with Fernandez's spectacular style, a Hollywood producer talked him into signing a fat, long-term contract. * * e There's no telling what effect TV will have on boxing. So far it hasn't developed any real fighters, and the boxing arenas have few filled seats. * * * Fighters have to perform in front of a live audience. The roars of the crowd give a fighter the same stimulation as a jolt in •the arm gives a guy on dope. 1, * • The TV performer doesn't have to wait for publicity re- leases to reach a faraway pub- lic. His first televised bout makes him known to millions. And if the TV announcer coins a new expression for a commonly used punch, an undeserved color is added to the pncher's credits. * * * I'd pick Primo Carnera, when he was heavy weight champ, as an example of what I'm trying to say, His individualized, un- orthodox punching style would have given TV fight announcers plenty of excuses t 0 coin phrases. It's quite possible that Carnera could have come to be regarded as the greatest fighter of all time— that is, if tele- vision existed in those days and his punches were analyzed by the same imaginative announ- cers.
