But we, in this little French parish,

Year's feast. It was then that : six
families 'from the province of Que-

that point on Lake Huron, they knelt
in prayer and asked God's protection

e ning these few settlers arose weary
• and tired from their long treck, .but
• being full of courage and determin-
• ation to carve a home for•themselves,
• they staked lots and after holding
• their first council meeting, it was de-
cided- that their parish would be as
mention above. Being July the women
• (busied themselves picking different
• kinds of berries, they peeled the
• bark from those huge 'birch trees and
e nt laid it on the ground to spread their
• berries on to effect a cure, and the
• men .stored away great quantities of
• fish and wild game. It is not our in
• tendon to write a part history of this
•• parish, so therefore We will drift
• back to New Year's feast to those
s early settlers, that first a New Year
• was a gloomy one, but from the sum-
mer harvest of wild fruit and the wild
game, they made merry; they did not
as today, we have an oveaplus of
luxuries and bon bons left over.
Their first New Year was one
'breadless to thein, they had not tilled
as yet any plot of land to sow buck-
wheat to exchange for ground floor,
Never the less 'being, all of ono heart
they shared together the little they
had on that first:.. New Year's day,
and since those many :years has gone
by, we as descendents take the full
example of our fore parents to. join
together on New Year's Day; and
exchange best wishes to one another
for throughout tie whole of the New
Year. Children and relatives travel
from afar for the occasion, and many
homes today in this parish have }3aen
the recipients of twenty to ninety
children and grand children, ' Such
is the picture of our forerpareitts and
the origin of New Year established
by the early pioneers of this parish.
