THE WAYSIDE
PULPIT
by EPHRAIM GINGERICH, Pastor
Blake A. Mennonite Church
"Look carefully then how you
walk, not as unwise men but as
wise, making the most of the
time, because the days are evil."
—Eph. 5: 15, 16. R.S.V.
One of the greatest gifts that
we have to enjoy is time. Time is
the parenthesis of life. It is the
threshold of Eternity. The right
use of our time is our greatest
privilege. Our use of to -day will
determine our happiness tomor-
row.
The Apostle Paul was challeng-
ing the church at Ephesus to make
their Christianity practical by
making the best possible use of
their time. This is a message for
us to -day as well, and very much
so as we enter upon another year.
As we review the past with it's
mistakes, failures and omissions,
we face the future with new de-
termination and a greater dedica-
tion to our God-given tasks.
Men's attitudes and expressions
toward time vary. Some say they
make time, others waste time;
some find time and many lose
time; some spend and a few pay
time; some even kill time while
others save time; but most of us
somewhere along the way are
guilty of just frittering away time.
How true are the words "time
is swift in flight." We can well
recall our fathers and grandfath-
ers referring to this fact. Time
waits for no one, the past years
are but a dream or as a tale that
is told. To us of this generation
this is becoming a very present
reality.
The King James Version uses
the phrase, "redeeming the tune"
Waltiaffactetrf
The clock strikes twelve...
the New Year arrives. May
all its seconds, minutes and
hours add up to a won-
derful year for you.
1
which suggests the idea of buying
back that which is past. This in
its truest sense is an impossiblity.
The past is past and will ever re-
main past. There is however con-
tained in these words the thought
of making up for lost time, or
better still, to make the best pos-
sible use of the present. This is
the Christian's greatest concern.
The Apostle is not challenging
his readers to live in the reminis-
cence of the past or in the fanci-
ful future but in the today; in the
here and now. Nor do we find
our blessed Lord living in the
good old days, He speaks much
of the now. "Today if you will
hear His voice harden not your
hearts," Heb. 4: 7b. "Behold now
is the accepted time, now is the
day of salvation." 11 Cor. 6: 2.
"Say not ye there are yet four
months and then cometh harvest,
behold I say unto you, life up your
eyes and look on the fields; for
they are white already to har-
vest." Jn. 4: 35.
The prophet said, "I shall pass
this way but once, is there any
good thing that I may do, let me
clo it now and not neglect for I
shall not pass this way again"
The present moments are ever be-
coming the forever past. This is
our day; may God grant us a
true sense of values as Jesus said:
"Seek ye first the Kingdom of God
and His righteousness and all
these things shall be added unto
you." Matt. 6: 33.
The New Year is before us with
its opportunities, challenges, bles-
sings and fears. We face it in
simple faith and with great con-
fidence that our God is able to
lead us as we seek to do His will.

.. Jesus Christ can save you too,
That's the news!
Your sinful heart He can renew,
That's the news!
This moment, if for sin you grieve,
This moment, if you do believe,
A ready pardon you'll receive,
That's the news!
And then if anyone should say,
What's the news?
Oh, tell them you've begun to pray,
That's the news!
That you have joined the conquer-
ing band,
And now with joy at God's com-
mand
You're marching to the better land,
That's the news!
