John Wilson's Grand Slam Home Run
Wins Wednesday's Game For Zurich
A grand -slam homer by catcher
John Wilson in the seventh in-
ning, with two out, gave the Zu-
rich Lumberkings an 8-4 victory
over the Mitchell Lincolns in their
best -of -seven playoffs for the Hu-
ron -Perth League championship,
to tie the series at one game each.
The game was played in Zurich
last Wednesday night, before the
largest crowd of the season.
Close Battle
Up untilthe seventh inning the
game was nip and tuck all the
way, with both teams taking the
lead at various stages. All four
of the Lincolns runs were of the
unearned variety.
• The visitors went one run up
in the second inning and added
another in the fourth before the
locals bit the score sheet. In the
last of the fifth Zurich exploded
for three big runs, when Pete
Masse reached first on a single,
went to second on a wild pitch,
and then scored on Arn Meyer's
double. After George Parker got
on as a hit batter, Doug O'Brien
reached first on a fielder's choice,
and then stole second, before Dan-
ny Trushinski lined out a single
to score both O'Brien and Meyer.
After two were out in the sixth,
Murphy managed to reach sec-
ond on an error,, and then score
on Brown's double, to again tie
the score. In the last half of the
sixth Zurich scored one run to
take a lead again, on singles by
Don O'Brien and John Wilson,
and a double by Pete Masse.
In the first half of the seventh
Mitohell tied the score, on an er-

The Big Blow
In the last of the seventh the
lid blew off the ball game, when
four big runs were scored, after
two were out. George Parker was
hit by the pitcher, Don O'Brien
singled, and then Bill Yungblut
was intentionally walked to load
the bases. The strategy backfired
for Mitchell, when the next bat-
ter, John Wilson, smashed out his
four -run homer to deep right cen-
tre,
entre. The ball crossed the race
track at the north end of the
ball field. The big rally was all
the Lumberkings needed to salt
away the victory.
Masse Stars
Pete Masse, big right fielder
for the locals, had a great night
at the plate, smashing out a sin-
gle, double and triple, Danny
Trushinski, John Wilson and Don
O'Brien each had two hits for
Zurich. Pitcher Buster Brown was
the only Mitchell hatter to hit
safely more than once, he had two
for three,
Masse's triple in the eighth was
a long drive to deep left field,
which also crossed the race
track.
Arn Meyer, on the moundfor
the locals, was very effective,
giving up only nine scattered hits
in the nine inning contest. He
gave up only one base on balls,
and struck out seven. His double
in the fifth was a big help in
the 'Kings' victory.

locals, in the third inning.
Claude Tessier started on the
mound for Zurich, and pitched
good .ball, until he got into trouble
in the sixth inning. He struck
out six batters and gave up six
hits in the time he worked. Don
O'Brien finished up for the locals,
and struck out three, giving up no
hits.
Gary Hopf, starry little south-
paw for Mitchell, worked well un-
til the sixth, when he was replac-
ed by veteran Bob Sadler. Hopf
struck out four and gave up three
hits in the time he worked; Sad-
ler struck out none, and gave up
two hits in the one and a third
innings he worked.
Zurich went three runs up in
the third, after George Parker
flied out, when Tessier lined out
a single, followed by anther sin-
gle off the bat of Doug O'Brien,
a walk to Danny Trushinski, and
then Don O'Brien's mighty triple
to deep left field.
Two more runs were added in
the sixth, when Don O'Brien star-
ted off with a walk, was advanc-
ed to second on Bill Yungblutt's
sacrifice, stole third, and then
scored on a wild pitch. John Wil-
son also worked a base on balls.
was moved to second when Gerry
Bell walked, and then scored on
an error to the Mitchell short-
stop.
The final two runs for the
'Kings came in the seventh, after
Tessier led off with -a single, and
scored on Doug O'Brien's triple to
deep right. O'Brien scored on an
error to the third baseman, on
the play.
Mitchell scored all their runs
in the sixth, on only one hit. A
walk, a double, and three more
bases on balls brought in three
runs for the Lincolns before man-
ager Don O'Brien came in to put
out the fire for Zurich. He struck
out Charlie Westman to retire the
side.
Charlie Westman was top man
with the bat for Mitchell, smash-
ing out two hits in four times at
bat. Zurich had only one error
in the seven -inning contest, while
Mitchell players miscued twice.
Zurich played without the ser-
vices of two of their regulars,
Bill Craig, who suffered a pulled
muscle in his back, and Arn Mey-
er both missed the game.

To Win First From Shallow Lake

ard's single, and also scored on

came in the seventh, after Wayne
Willert had reached first on a
base on balls, and then scored on
Amacher's double.

Masse was in command all the
way.

led the locals at the bat, with two
hits each. Both of Wagner's were
doubles. Bryan Geoffrey chipped
in with a triple, Dennis Amach-
er a double, and singles went to
