Zurich Citizens News, 1959-08-19, Page 7WELNE DA7, :133"0= 10, 1„5a Zurich 8—St. Marys 4; Stone Town Eliminated From Huron -Perth Finals Scoring seven runs in the first inning on five hits and three Walks, the Zurich Lumberkings thumped the St. Marys Legionair- es 8-4 last Wednesday night to eliminate them from further com- petition in the Huron -Perth league finals. By winning the game, played on the local diam- ond, Zurich won the series three games to none, The locals produced all their hits in the first inning, and after that stage of the game failed to hit safely again. Darkness forced the calling of the game in the fifth inning. Jim Havis, who started on the mound for the St. Marys team. was given rough. treatment in the short time he worked during the first inning. He walked the first two batters, then Bill Craig fol- lowed with a single, Bill Yung- blut with another single, and John Wilson cleared the bases with his triple. After walking the next batter Havis was pulled in favour of Gary Vowel, who managed to get the next Zurich batter, Jerry Bell, to ground. out. The next bat- ter, Don O'Brien, smashed out an- other triple, and then scored on Doug O'Briens single. The final Zurich run came in the fourth, on two sacrifices, two walks and a St. Marys error. The visitors scored two runs in both the first and second innings, on two hits in each inning. After the second they never were in scoring position throughout the rest of the game. No player on the Zurich team hit safely more than once. For St. Marys Art Holman managed to bang out two hits. Arn Meyer, on the hill for the locals struck out six batters, while he gave up only four hits, but he walked six men. Zurich had a total of eight walks. The game was played in Sebringville, Bryan Geoffrey was the star in the locals victory, smashing out three hits in three times at bat, one of them a triple in the secondwhich drove in two runs. Larry Bedard and Ron Deichert were next in line each getting a :double and single. John Masse; Wayne Willert and Bill Wagner each had a single. Lefty John Masse pitched a terrific game for the locals, giv- ing up only three hits through- out the seven -inning contest. He struck out nine Sebringville bat- ters, and gave up only three bases ox balls. Flack started on the mound for the losers, and was replaced by Murray. Between them they gave up ten hits, struck out only two Zurich batters, and walked five. Zurich got off to an early start in the first inning. Bob Johnston reached first on an error to the Sebringville third baseman, Larry Bedard and John Masse both drew a base on balls, and then suceesive singles by Wayne Wil- lert and Ron Deichert drove in these runs. They added three more runs in the second, when Dennis Am- acher walked, Bill Wagner bang- ed out a single and Bryan Geof- frey a triple. Geoffrey scored on an error to the loser's second baseman. A single was added in the fifth when John Masse lined. out a single, advanced to third on two walls and then scored on Bill Wagner's sacrifice fly. The final run for Zurich came in the sixth, when Geoffrey led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by Earl Wagner, and then scored on Larry Bedard's double. The lone run for Sebringville was scored in the fifth inning, on a walk, a stolen base, and a hit. Mitchell Lincolns Take First Game From Zurich In Huron -Perth Finals Mitchell Lincolns drew first bl- oold in their best four -out -of -sev- en series with the Zurich Lumber - kings, for the Huron -Perth title, when they trounced the locals 11-3 in Mitchell on Monday night. The second game in the series is scheduled for Zurich on Wednes- day, (tonight) at 6 p.m. All but two of the Mitchell runs were unearned, as southpaw Claude Tessier had trouble .find- ing the plate. He walked 10 men in the five and one-third innings he worked. Don O'Brien replaced Tessier on the mound, and gave up two bases on balls and two hits. Tessier gave up only three hits and struck out four Mitchell batters. Gary Hopf, on the mound for the Lincolns, pitched good ball, giving up six hits, walking only two, and struck out seven. John Wilson was the top man with the wood for Zurich, bang- ing out two hits in three tries. Singles were picked up by Bill Craig, Don O'Brien and Tessier. Danny Trushinski lined out a double in the fifth. The only Mitchell batter to hit safely more than once was Joe Murphy, with a single and a double. Wayne Willert was the hero in the locals victory, smashing out a home run in the eighth inning, after pitcher John Masse had rea- ched first base on a walk. The other Zurich runs were scored in the first inning, after Earl Wag- ner had led off with a double, and John Masse came through with a homer. Sebringville scored two of their runs in the third, on errors, and added their extra in the seventh on a home run. Lefty John. Masse gave up only four hits in the eight inning con- test, while he struck out 12 bat- ters. Errors proved costly to the loc- als, as they outhit the visitors 6-5. Until the seventh inning Sebring- ville had only one hit. Zurich made five errors throughout the contest. John Masse was on the mound for Zurich, and struck out 12 bat- ters. He walked seven. Flack, the Sebringville pitcher, struck out three and walked one. Earl Wagner was top hitter for the locals, with a single and a double. Single hits went to Bob Johnston, Wayne Willert, John Masse and Dennis Amacher.
