Zurich juveniles
Swamp llensall
15-1 Monday Night
With Johnnie Masse giving up
only one hit in six innings, the
Zurich Lions Juveniles made the
most of nine hits, 13 bases on
ballls and three errors to trounce
the Hensall Juveniles by a 15-1
score, in Zurich on Monday night.
Ron Deichert, Earl Wagner, and
Wayne Willert led the Zurich hit-
ting attack with two hits each,
one of Willert's being a triple, in
the third inning. Single hits went
to Bob Johnston, Larry Bedard,
and Dennis Amacher.
Zurich had one big inning, in
the fifth, when they scored 11 of
their runs. Masse struck out nine
Hensall batters throughout the
seven inning contest. Kyle and
MacKinnon picked up the only hits
for the Hensall crew,

Juveniles Lose
First Game
Of Season, 13-0
The Zurich Lions Juveniles suf-
fered their first defeat of the sea-
son last Tuesday night in Sea -
forth, when they were victims of
a 13-0 shellacing at the hands of
the Seaforth Juveniles. Eight er-
rors and the lack of hits was the
downfall of the locals.
Earl Wagner, leading off in the
first inning of the game, earned
the only hit for Zurich, a single.
They were held hitless throughout
the next five innings.
The Seaforth team only manag-
ed five hits, while seven batters
reached first on walks.

Mitchell Juveniles
Edge Locals 6-5
For Second. Loss
Playing in Mitchell last Thurs-
day night the Zurich Juveniles
were edged by Mitchell 6-5, in a
seven -inning contest.
Ron Deichert led the locals with
three hits, one of them a double.
Larry Bedard chipped in with two
safeties, one of them a double,
while Earl Wagner and Wayne
Willert picked up the extra hits.
Bob Johnston on the mound for
Zurich, gave up only four hits, and
walked five.
Going into the last half of the
game the score was all tied up, but
the Mitchell boys managed to
squeeze across the winning run.

Locals to 9-1 Win
Over Goderich.
Playing their third game away
from home in five nights, the Zur-
ich Lions Juveniles uncorked
themselves for a 13 -hit attack in
Goderich Saturday night to swamp
the Lakesiders 9-1.
Johnnie Masse, classy southpaw
pitcher, had himself a field day as
he struck out 16 Goderich players.
In the first three innings he struck
out the first nine batters to face
him,
Ron Deichert was again the hit-
ting star for the local crew,
smashing out three hits in four
times at bat, one of them a triple.
Larry Bedard, John Masse, Den-
nis Amacher and Bill Wagner each
had two hits, with singletons go
ing to Richard Klapp and Bob
Johnston. One of Wagner's hits
was also a triple.

And At Dashwood
Rain on Friday night forced the
calling off of two games in the
Huron -Perth 'league. In Zurich,
St. Marys and Zurich were hooked
up in a close battle, with Zurich
leading 3-0 at the time the rain
came.
Meanwhile in Dashwood the Tig-
ers were leading the Listowel Jun-
iors 2-0 when they were forced to
stop play. Both games will have
to be replayed.
The game in Zurich saw the
locals score two runs in the first
inning, and acid another in the
second. Claude 'Tessier was on the
mound for the Lumberkings, and
gave up three hits in the three
innings played. He struck out two
St. Marys batters. Doug O'Brien,
Bill Craig, Don O'Brien, and Bill
Yungblut each had picked up a
single, while Arn Meyer had
smashed out a double.
In .Dashwood
The game in Dashwood was in
the third inning when the rain
came, with the home -town Tigers
leading 2-0 over the Listowel Jun-
iors. Both the Dashwood runs
came in the first stanza, after
Genttner had led off with a single,
followed by Jhn Hayter's triple.
Mitre was on the mound for Dash-
wood, and struck out five men in
the first three innings. He gave
up no hits and walked none.
Dates for the replay of either
game has not been set.

Over Mitchell
After scoring three runs in the
third inning, the Dashwood Tigers
were held scoreless until the sev-
enth, when they pushed across the
winning run to defeat the Mitchell
Lincolns 4-3, in a nine -inning con-
test.
Mitchell scored two in the fifth
and added their extra run in the
sixth. The game was played in the
Dashwood ball park.
Steve Mitro, star right-hand pit-
cher of the Tigers, held the Lin -
coins in full control throughout
the entire nine innings, as he gave
up only four hits, and struck out
10 batters. Meanwhile the Tigers
were jumping on Buster Brown
and Porky Wallace for eight hits.

Hensall Legion
Holds Annual
Nellie at ayfield

Jowitt's Grove, Bayfield, proved
an ideal setting for the annual
picnic of the Hensall Legion and
Ladies Auxiliary and their famil-
ies,- with seventy five attending.
It was held on Sunday, July 12.
Many enjoyed a swim in the lake
and sports were run off, directed
by Mrs. Howard Smale, Mrs. W,
J. Cameron, and "Doc" Cameron.

Delbert Geiger Is
New President
Of Smillie Reunion

The usual large attendance was
on hand at the Lions Park, Sea -
forth, Saturday, July 11, for the
reunion of the Smillie Clan. Mem-
bers registered from these distant
points, Toronto, Niagara Falls,
Brantford, Simcoe, Kingsville, De-
troit, Hamilton, Alvinston, Hyde
Park. During the lunch hour a
welcome was extended to all by
Dr. A. B. Smillie, Niagara Falls.
Letters were received from dist-
ant members of the clan in Van-
couver, Montreal, New Jersey, and
North Dakota.
A program of sports was con-
vened by Mary Geiger, and Bill
Howe, assisted by Kay Elder. Jud-
ges of sports were Mss. Ben Smil-
lie, Mrs, James Smillie, and Fred
Howe. Prize winners in aquatic
sports and games were: Steve El-
der, Ronald Elliott, Wayne Peck,
Jean Elder, Margie Geiger, Fred
Elder, Ralph Geiger, Donna Peck,
Donna Eatwell, Ruth Geiger, Don
Geiger, Norma Geiger, Ken Elder,
Diane Eatwell, Jim Statham, Fred
Howe, Herod Elder, Lorne Elder,
Dorothy Elliott, Ivy Smillie, Elva
Peck, Pearl Geiger, Helen Howe
and Grace Peck. Lucky draw was
won by Dorothy Elliott.
After a sumptuous dinner, pres-
ident Harold Shepherd conducted
a short business meeting, when it
was decided that the reunion for
next year should be held at the
same place. Delbert Geiger was
elected president. Greetings from
the picnic were sent to Dr. Jennie
Smillie Robertson, Toronto, who
through illness was unable to at-
tend.

Huron Nominee
To Represent Ont.
Douglas Jamieson, RR 4. Clint-
on, has been selected as Huron
County's nominee to represent On-
tario on the Canadian National
Exhibition Scholarship for 1959.
This Scholarship of $6,000 is awar-
ded annually to a person wishing
to enroll in a recognized College
of Agriculture or a Verterinary
College. The winnerwill be an-
nounced at the time of the 1959
CNE.
MR. AND MRS. RICHARD ROBINSON, of Goshen.
Line North, observed their 45th wedding anniversary last
week. They were married on June 24, 1914, at the home
of Mrs. Robinson's parents in Saskatchewan, and have
lived on the Goshen Line for anumber of years since.

The mission committee of the
Zurich EYF held a family night
social on July 10 at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Russell Grainger,

SS 4, West Stanley, was slightly
delayed because of showers,
After two innings of play the
wind chased the 57 persons pres-
ent back to the house where they
enjoyed a short program. The

Mrs. Annie Richardson, the old-
est resident of Hensel], passed
away on Tuesday morning, July
14, at South Huron Hospital, Ex-
eter ,where she had been a patient
for the past 15 months. She was
in her 94th year.
Born in England, the former
Annie Procter, she came to Can-
ada 47 years ago and has resided
in Hensall since. Her husband,
Thomas Richardson, predeceased
her some 80 years ago. She was
a member of St, Paul's Anglican
Church, Hensall.
Surviving are two daughters:
Mrs. Archie Noakes, and Mrs.
Mary Taylor, Hensall; one son,
Jack, of England; 3.3 grandchild-
ren; 42 great -gran children, and
two great -great grandchildren.
The body is resting at the Bon-
thron funeral chapel, Hensall,
where private services will be held
on Thursday, July 16, at 2 p.m.
Burial will be mage in Exeter
cemetery.

Bob Erb favored the group with
an accordion solo. Mrs, Harold
Rader and Katherine sang a duet.
This was 'followed by an accord-
ion solo by Helen Grainger, who
dedicated her number to Mr. and
Mrs. Oscar Greb, who were cele-
brating their 25th wedding anni-
versary that day.
Roy McAdams played a piano
solo and this was followed by an-
other piano solo by Dennis Am-β’
acher. Rebecca Steckle, playing.
the accordion, led in a short sing-
song.
The group then adjourned to the
lawn where several games were
played and lunch was served by
the members of the EYF, who
were assisted in the kitchen by
several other ladies. Leonard Mer-
ner tendered a vote of thanks on
behalf of the parents and Eliza-
beth Finlay on behalf of the You-
th Fellowship,
Mrs, Russell Grainger respond-
ed' to the vote of thanks and ex-
pressed the hope that some day
the group would come back again.

the Bronson Line, and other rela-
tives in the vicinity.
89th Birthday
A family gathering, honouring
Mr. John Scotchmer Sr, on his.
89th birthday, was held on Friday
in Bayfield. Due to the wind and
rain the picnic supper, originally
planned for the park, was held in
the Arena, with about 35 of his
relatives present. Celebrating
birthdays with Mr. Scotchmer, who
was 89 on July 11, were Miss Anne
Scotchmer, Mr. Earl Galster and
Roy Scotchmer, all of whom had
birthdays close to the same time,
EYF Meet
On Friday, July 10, the Mission.
Committee of the Evangelical
Youth Fellowship of the Zurich
Evangelical Church held a family
night social at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Russell Grainger. Des-
pite a few showers, games and a
short program were presented, and
