Steer -Raising Farm
A unique Holstein steer -raising
operation in Bruce County was
one of the farm programs inspect-
ed by members of Huron Soil and
Cr op Improvement Association
during their annual bus tour last
Tuesday.
The operation was seen at the
farm of Norman Schmidt, Mild-
may, a past president of the Bruce
association. He contended the
black and white steers were cheap-
er to buy, made faster gains, re-
quired less expensive feed and sold
for almost the same money as
good beef type steers.
He said his steers had gained
300 pounds over the winter at a

located at the Hensall sales barn.
A move to have all trucking con-
tracts for the movement of hogs
from yards to plant, awarded on
the basis of competitive tenders
gained ground Tuesday when the
directors adopted a resolution to
be forwarded to the Ontario As-
sociation. It was explained that
there was a feeling among smaller
trucking concerns that they were
being discriminated against. The
meeting felt further consideration
should be given the complaint and
adopted a resolution to make pos-
sible consideration on a provincial
level.
The meeting heard Jake Koeh-
ler, of Toronto, sales manager of
the Ontario organization, explain
the application of deficiency pay-
ments and the effect the regula-
tions will have on the hog produc-
ers' operations. Doug Miles, Huron
agricultural representative, told of
the plans to establish feeder pig
clubs.
