Plays 1111 Tie With Clinton In Season's Opener Playing their first game of or- ganizedbaseball, the Zurich Lions Juveniles tied Clinton 11.11, in Clinton. last Thursday night. The locals outhit the Clinton team 15-8 and were leading right up, until the end of the game. Earl Wagner led the Zurich crew at the bat, smashing (tut four hits in five times at bat, Larry Bedard was next in line with three for five, and Bob Johnston kicked in with two singles in three times at the plate. Even though 11 runs were scored .against him, Johnnie Masse was the star for the locals, striking out 14 batters in seven innings. He gave up eight hits, and walked six. Meanwhile his team mates were pounding out 15 hits off the slants of Bartliff, on the mound for Clin- ton. The biggest rally for the Zurich gang came in the fifth inning, when they pushed five runs across the plate. They added two more in both the third and fourth, and singles in the second and seventh. Clinton scored three in the first, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in both the sixth and seventh. Jerry Bell Stars In Lum.berkings Tie With St. Marys Despite a brilliant one -hit pit- ching effort on the part of south- paw Jerry Bell, the Zurich Lum- berkings were only able to salvage a 1-1 tie in their game with St. Marys, in the stone town last Fri- day night. While Bell was holding his op- ponents hitless through six and one-third innings, his team mates were banging out seven hits, in- cluding three by Bell himself. Bill Yungblut added two, with single- tons going to John Wilson and Bill Craig. Zurich scored their lone run in the first inning after Don O'Brien received a base on balls. Bill Yung- blut advanced him to second, and he scored on Wilson's single. St, Marys' run came in the last of the seventh, when Gary Vowel reached first on a base on balls. He advanced to second on a passed ball, and then scored when pinch - hitter Graham came through with a single, the only hit of the game for the stone-towners. BAYFIELD (By Mrs. Russell Grainger) Wilfred Turner, Parry Sound, spent the weekend with his par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. John Turner. Mrs. Wilfred Turner, Linda and Johnny, who have been spending some time with his parents, re- turned with her husband to Parry Sound, where Wilfred is with a construction company. Miss Elaine Grainger left by plane on Thursday for Portland, Oregon, where she will visit her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Johnson and other relatives. Guests on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. John Turner were their fam- ily, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Turner, Gail and Philip, Mr. and Mrs. Fraser Stirling, Jerry and Cathy, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Turner, Debbie and Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Turner, Linda and John- ny. ohn- n Mrs. Thomas Westlake and her grandson Ronald, were guests of honour at a birthday dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Westlake. Also present were Mrs. Keith Westlake, Robert, Kenneth and Elaine. We are sorry to report that Mrs. Dennis Denomme is a pat- ient in St. Michael's Hospital, To- ronto, having undergone surgery there last Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Talbot, AZ- berta Bible Institute, arrived home on Monday and will spend the summer with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Talbot, and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Tieman, Mrs. Ann Dean, Stratford and Mr. Ed. Cook, London, spent the week- end at Cedar Grove, Bayfield. Mr. and Mrs. Tieman have opened their restaurant for weekends, and expect to be open full time in the very near future. 0 OBITUAY Miss P. Buchanan A native of Zurich, Miss Pearl Buchanan passed away in Toronto on Tuesday, May 26, as the result of a stroke. Born and raised in Zurich, she was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. George Buchanan, Zu- rich. Surviving is one sister, Miss Cla- ra Buchanan, Toronto. Mrs, Mary Beaver Mrs. Mary Beaver, the former Mary Elizabeth Gellman, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Johnston, Bayfield, on Friday, June 5, 1959, in her 74th year. Born in Hay Township on Aug- ust 9, 1885, Mrs. Beaver was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Gellman. She and her hus- band, Edward, who pre -deceased her several years ago, spent most of their married life in Zurich. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Murray (Eileen) Brunskill, Belmont; Mrs. Walter (Alice) Johnston, Bayfield; two brothers, Henry and John, both of Zurich; and one sister, Mrs. George (Pearl) Wilson, Stanley. There are also four grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the Westlake funeral home, Zurich on Monday afternoon, at 2.30 p.m., with interment in the St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, on the Goshen Line. Rev. E. J.
