Miles, aagricnitural rep- resentative for Huron County) Sow the best and beat the rest is a saying that has been carried down through the ages as far as the use of good seed is concerned. This holds true as far as the white beans are concerned. The gener- al comments from trade are that the good farmer and those with a large acreage are sowing fresh seed every year. One should be careful in select- ing the seed that is to be sown in the production of a quality crop. New seed or seed from inspected fields is as relatively free of dis- ease as can be obtained The REGULAR PRICE $9.50 FOR ONLY $7.39 CHARCOAL ONLY 55c BAG THERMOS JUGS PICNIC COOLERS SEE OUR WIDE VARIETY — ALL AT Special Prices I. Anthracnose is a disease of beans that has been prevalent over the past few years. In fact it has almost put the men out of the bean business , when they were sowing some of the old varieties. The new variety Sanilac, during the past year has been quite a boom to farmers. In fact it is reported by some growers that the pick during the last year has re- sulted in a $50 increase per acre in their crop returns. The sahilac variety has been relatively free from anthracnose, probably be- cause of the bringing of new seed into the area; a seed that was re- latively free of anthracnose. Our farmers should be careful in the selection of their seed and should buy registered seed that they know is clean of antracnose, rust and blight. The use of old seed over and over again from the same fields is liable to carry strains of the disease that are peculiar to that particular field and that par- ticular area. For those reasons, it is essential to sew quality seed. The Sanilac variety has been the one that has been most preval- ently sown in Huron County in 1958. The crop did not look as good as the previously grown variety of Michelite, but at harvest time it outyielded the Michhelite var- iety. Both the Sanilac and the Michelite are acceptable by the Canning Trade. The Clipper var- iety is not as acceptable to the trade because the bean has a tend- ency to mush in the processing and in a dry season they have a tendency to split. Farmers would be well advised to use preferably Sanilac but if preferred Michelite and u s e the very best of seed that can be purchased. On the market this year is Seed from' Registered No. 1, Second Generation, and some of it is third generation. There is a fair amount of good quality seed available and every farmer should endeavour to purchase the best, Steps are being taken up to find growers of elite stock seed in Hur- on County so that we may in the years to come be sure of a supply of high quality seed. 16 years of Conservative rule have resulted in a growth of arrogance, of beauracracy and in the denial of many rights of the individual.
