Fred Ducharme) Mr. and Mrs. Max Forsyth, Detroit, spent the weekend in their summer cottage along the lake, south of St. Joseph. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Pierre Duch- arme, long time residents of Am- herstburg, are in this neighbour- hood at present, with the former's parents. They are seeking to es- tablish themselves in this district. We welcome them in our rnidst and wish them happiness and all kinds of good luck. Liberal Meeting On Wednesday last a Liberal meeting was held in this parish in favour of the Liberal candidate, Harry' Strang. The meeting was well attended. Celebrate Birthday On Sunday last a very enjoy- able evening was spent at the home of Mrs. Josephine Ducharme, of this highway, when her children gathered in a body to celebrate their mother's 78th birthday. .A delicious dinner was served for the occasion and the evening was spent in chit chatting, and renew- ing past incidents. After enjoy- ing themselves till their hearts content, all left for their homes wishing again to meet their mother for more birthdays. Decoration Day On Saturdaylast was da a Y, known to American people as De - oration Day, a day set aside each year for the purpose of decorat- ing homes and surroundings by beautifying and putting things in order. The average citizen works a little overtime before hand, then they are free to take a trip some- where. There are many Amer- icans today that are Canadian born and they prefer Canada for their outing. We believe the past week- end will be an all time high. Hun- dreds of cars travelled the Blue Water Highway, going north mos- tly, enroute to visit relatives and friends. Others took to their summer cottages along the lake. Perhaps at the present time there is much unemployment, never the less it is not only the rich and business people who take off, and judging from the traffic over Dec- oration Day, we feel justified in saying that many are from the working class. We believe that those who are willing to offer their service to some extent en- joy prosperity as in the years gone by. Beans Bean seeding is again being de- layed by the Monday morning heavy rain. There is still time for the planting of beans, but each day in the month of June shortens the season. There is always some- thing that flares up to cause alarm in growing that delicate crop. In the spring, delayed by weather such as we are having now, or by frost. In the fall, the wet Septem- ber spell, and again the variating prices at market time. ----o Sugar and Spice (,Continued from Page Two) be bearing a guitar. A third would produce a rye loaf and hunk of salami, probably purloined in a delicatessen. Another would bring forth eggs from an overcoat pocket. A fifth would be clutch- ing an empty cigarette package, on the back of which he'd written his latest poem. k * * There would be ballads and caly- psos and food and drink and good talk long into the night, until a call from the landlady suggested we "get them noisy bums outa there", They were irresponsible, aimless, lazy, a nuisance to the other stud- ents, a trial to the professors. They were obviously destined for failure, every one of them. * The other day, my wife and I were telling the husky 11 -year-old who was the baby then, about some of these old friends. We went over them, one by one. The guitar -player is a CBC producer. The salami thief is a chartered ac- countant. The poet is a better poet, and a professor of English into the bargain. Others are: a top newspaper reporter, a theat- rical director, an economist, and two university professors. * * Nope, I think I'll skip the class reunion, the cheers, the college songs and all the honest fun of the Class of '49, and just remember what it was really like.
